The first thing I have to say about Bella’s Boys is that it took me back to the early 90s, and not just because that’s when the book is set, but Clark captures this watershed moment in horror, specifically with splatterpunk, where things still felt like they could be new and surprising and/or shocking. As the story reveals itself it just keeps getting better and better and I found myself reliving those seminal moments of reading Philip Nutman, Clive Barker, and David Schow for the first time. I don’t know how much of the story’s mythology is based on established lore and how much came out of his own head, but it was totally engrossing, as is the bonus short story at the end. This was such a great story and I listened to the entire audiobook while working today. I highly recommend Bella’s Boys!
