Historia
In this extraordinary book, Sarah Polley explores what it is to live in one’s body, in a constant state of becoming, learning, and changing. Each of these six essays captures a piece of Polley’s life as she remembers it, while at the same time examining the fallibility of memory, the mutability of reality in the mind, and the possibility of experiencing the past anew, as the person she is now but was not then. As Polley writes, the past and present are in a “reciprocal pressure dance.”

Riveting, intimate memoir - full of poignant wisdom, beauty and hope
Revisado: 11-23-24
Loved this vivid memoir of Sarah Polley's life thus far, and what a vast territory it traverses. It was engaging, emotional, compelling - and relatable. Having had scoliosis & surgery at a similar age, I've never read a first-hand account of the experience so accurately related as Polley does in this book. I hope she writes many more books and films!

Historia
When 12-year-old Angela Kato arrives in LA, the last thing she wants to do is spend the entire summer with her grandparents. But in the Kato family, one is never permitted to complain. Grandma Michi and Aunt Janet put Angela to work in their flower shop, folding origami and creating 1,001 crane displays for newlyweds. At first, Angela learns the trade begrudgingly. But when her folding skills improve and her relationships with family and friends grow, Angela is able to cope with her troubles, especially her parents’ impending divorce.

Moving and authentic coming of age story
Revisado: 02-04-24
Loved this poignant story of a young Japanese-American adolescent coming of age in Pasadena during her parent's divorce. The story was cleverly chaptered by Michi's origami crane tips, as Angela is suddenly immersed in her grandparent's community, the flower shop, and first love. I was totally engaged and felt many familiar memories of similar adolescent emotions - thanks to an outstanding performance by Chloe Madrigal. Great work!!

Historia
In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

Yes yes yes‼️
Revisado: 11-16-23
Was so moved and riveted by this book - the story, the writing, the remarkable experiences shared. Like the author, I was diagnosed with Lymphoma at 22 and went through many of the same experiences decades before, here in NYC. So many of Suleika's experiences were similar to my own as a younger woman (cancer, solo travels, unusual name, storytelling career, Brooklyn, etc) Her intimate, courageous, meditative impressions were inspiring, poignant and exhilarating! Thank you for this book and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Really enjoyable and informative about a charismatic and inspiring writer/director icon
Revisado: 10-05-23
Loved all the perspectives, background on Nora's childhood, info about her parents and sister. The insights about Nora based on her early life was rich. (Was slightly disappointed in the unfortunate French enunciations, which should have been perfect.) Having heard many Nora stories from friends and crew members, it felt very authentic and genuine. Great quotes from a fantastic assortment of colleagues and associates. Thank you ♥️ for this comprehensive biography.

Twenty years after her iconic memoir Shutterbabe, Deborah Copaken is at her darkly comedic nadir: battered, broke, divorcing, dissected, and dying — literally — on sexism’s battlefield as she scoops up what she believes to be her internal organs into a glass container before heading off to the hospital...in an UberPool.

Loved it!!
Revisado: 01-23-22
Was thrilled that the author read her own audio book, as it made the experience even more compelling, personal and relatable. It was such an epic, candid and emotional full circle experience , I felt like I lived through a journey with an old friend - happy for her accomplishments and rewards in the end. Any woman who has ever been ambitious, independent, and overcome medical, professional and middle-age related challenges will understand and relate to this remarkable and winning narrative. Thank you, Deborah Copaken, for being fearless enough to spell out what being a single woman professional is like in this day and age, and not shying away from presenting it like it is.
