Can’t wait for the next one
Revisado: 05-21-23
It’s a rare audiobook that I will buy in hardcover for my bookshelves. This definitely made the cut. Love it! It’s my misfortune, though, that it’s a debut novel because that means going to have to wait a long time to read another by this wonderful author. I just hope she continues to write in the same genre.
Though I’ll be getting an actual paper and ink copy, I have to say that I really enjoyed hearing it read and I want to express my appreciation to the reader. Excellent job! Thank you!

In the latest entertaining and hilarious Professor Dr. Dr. Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld novel, our hopelessly out-of-touch hero is forced to confront uppity librarians, the rector of the university, and a possible hostile takeover, all while trying to remain studiously above it all.

I love this series and I hope Alexander McCall Smith will write more. It’s a charming yet insightful tale about human nature and, as always, very entertaining.

Can’t wait for number four!
Revisado: 01-21-23
I absolutely love this series and number three is, if possible, even better than the first two. I feel like I know these characters - they’re so vivid and so believable yet they keep coming up with surprises.
Fiona Shaw’s narration is spot on. One bonus of the audio version is the interesting and entertaining interview with Richard Osman.

Historia
The irresistible wit and charm of Alexander McCall Smith's New York Times best-selling No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series has won over countless fans. The same subtle humor and enchanting characterizations are full on display in At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances, the third entertaining novella starring Professor Doctor Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld.

The best series by McCall Smith
Revisado: 12-28-22
This is so much fun! The author of Portuguese Irregular Verbs is charming especially because he’s so very wonderfully human. McCall Smith’s dry humour always makes me laugh but this one especially. The narration, too, is flawless!

Historia
“I’m sorry but the answer’s no.” Reluctant author, Anthony Horowitz, has had enough. He tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne that after three books he’s splitting and their deal is over. The truth is that Anthony has other things on his mind. His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the Vaudeville Theater in London’s West End. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night. The play is panned by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Margaret Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing.

My favourite Anthony Horowitz mystery
Revisado: 12-12-22
This is fast moving and clever from beginning to end. Who else but Horowitz would have thought to weave fiction with autobiography so creatively? This is not the first of this series but I think it’s the best. A bonus is that each new book sees greater character development of the detective, Hawthorn. I love it, too, that his own part in the story is so self-effacing. Only a truly accomplished writer would show himself in such an unflattering light.
Excellent narration as well.

Best narrator. Absorbing story.
Revisado: 03-30-22
I often choose audio books just because Imogen Church is the reader. She’s so talented and convincing and never disappoints. I’m constantly amazed at how she can do men and children as well as women and as for accents never fails to nail it. I didn’t enjoy the book much though. Its more intense than I like, mostly pretty grim. I did like the ending though.

Revisado: 02-10-22
I’ve listened to every one of these mysteries more than once. I love cosy mysteries but not many of them are as well written as these. The characters have depth, the setting couldn’t be more charming and Neil Dudgeon’s reading is perfect!

Very well told. Well developed plot. Wonderful central character and an intriguing setting. It’s a shame the recording was flawed by the reader’s embarrassing attempts at accents. Still, I’m looking forward to the second in the series.
