Historia
Shocking news reaches them—an old friend has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing. The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. As they encounter drug dealers, art forgers, and online fraudsters—as well as heartache close to home—Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim have no idea whom to trust.

I absolutely loved this book. The storyline, the introspective parts, the amazing narration, all of it. So good. I will listen again.

Historia
Toby Fleishman thought he knew what to expect when he and his wife of almost fifteen years separated: weekends and every other holiday with the kids, some residual bitterness, the occasional moment of tension in their co-parenting negotiations. He could not have predicted that one day, in the middle of his summer of sexual emancipation, Rachel would just drop their two children off at his place and simply not return. He had been working so hard to find equilibrium in his single life. The winds of his optimism, long dormant, had finally begun to pick up. Now this.

Unlikeable Characters Having an Unhappy Life
Revisado: 02-16-22
The main character of this novel is an unlikeable ungrateful jerk who makes choices with no understanding of the potential consequences. He seems to have no sense at all and very little concern for anyone else.
I had trouble understanding the narrator, who has almost God-like insight into what the other characters are thinking even though she is an actual character in the book. It was very hard to follow this aspect of the plot.
I should have liked this book because the message is something I personally resonate with and experience every day, Characters should make choices that make sense and have some ability for self reflection. Was it supposed to be funny? It wasn't. I stuck it out to the bitter end because the reviews were good. My mistake. Anyhow, thumbs down for me.

Historia
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

The Best of the Best
Revisado: 11-27-21
OK everyone knows what the Hobbit's about - the star of this version is Andy Serkis and it's not just the voices, it's his turn of phrase. I really can't recommend this audio version more highly.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Poorly written pseudo-spiritual drivel
Revisado: 11-27-21
I should have stopped listening after the phrase "thoughts drifted by like croutons in a bowl of soup." Maybe I was hoping A Midnight Library would eventually become profound and heartwarming. Instead, I found the main character to be insufferable, one-dimensional, and completely self-absorbed, and the pseudo-scientific premise to be preposterous. My advice for something truly heartwarming and uplifting - watch "It's a Wonderful Life" or read "A Christmas Carol". Don't waste your time with A Midnight Library.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Revisado: 11-06-21
I enjoy every episode of the GN Book Club, and this one was quite interesting as it reminded me of when my book group read this book many years ago. Such fun to recall that experience so many years ago.
I also appreciate every month all the recommendations for other books to read or listen.
Thank you GN and crew!

Historia
This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman," Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness," and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

Thoughtful story, perfectly narrated
Revisado: 09-06-21
The narration for this story is dead-on perfect and I can't imagine a better experience for an audible book. This narration was perfectly paced for this rather slow story. I tend to read too fast, and can honestly say this audible book improved my experience. The story itself is somehow covers a lot of ground and is very thoughtful. Highly recommend.

Dickensian, with lots of twists and turns
Revisado: 06-17-21
I recommend this gothic novel for readers who enjoy Dickens with a few modern twists. My one criticism is that it was a bit slow in parts, but the climax near the end was worth the wait. Highly recommend.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Excellent voice acting, Great story telling
Revisado: 04-19-21
I loved the voice acting, the story line, and the themes. The characters were straight out of central casting but I think that was intentional. An Irish cop, an Italian mobster, several church ladies, an old black guy who drinks too much and a young black guy who could have been a professional baseball player but instead becomes a drug dealer. By the end of the book everybody has come around to a truer version of themselves. I don't want to go into the themes but let's just say there's a lot to think about here, and it's entertaining along the way. Highly recommend.
