Historia
April Clarke-Cliveden was the first person Hannah Jones met at Oxford. Vivacious, bright, occasionally vicious, and the ultimate It girl, she quickly pulled Hannah into her dazzling orbit. Together, they developed a group of devoted and inseparable friends—Will, Hugh, Ryan, and Emily—during their first term. By the end of the year, April was dead.

Tl;dr BORING. SLOW. Skip this one!
Revisado: 01-12-25
Have to agree with others who said this was a slog. Writers of thrillers these days seem to have lost their ability to propel a plot forward without relying on (1) female protagonists with absurdly poor decision-making skills and (2) side storylines about miscarriage/threat of miscarriage. So tired of these. As others have noted, it also seems so lazy to scramble up the timeline instead of actually building up narrative tension, pad with lots of repetitive inner-voice nonsense and call it “suspense”. While this is par for the course these days, at least most thrillers then have an interesting motive or twist at the end…but this book fails to deliver on that as well. It is painfully obvious early on whodunnit, and how. And then the actual narration is so painfully slow! —To the point of being unlistenable, unless playback speed is kept at 1.15-1.2. But even literally making the book 15% shorter did not help. Just skip this one. Really! I only kept it because I have credits to burn.

Historia
Rufus Leung Gresham, future Earl of Greshambury and son of a former Hong Kong supermodel has a problem: the legendary Gresham Trust has been depleted by decades of profligate spending, and behind all the magazine covers and Instagram stories manors and yachts lies nothing more than a gargantuan mountain of debt. The only solution, put forth by Rufus’s scheming mother, is for Rufus to attend his sister’s wedding at a luxury eco-resort, a veritable who’s-who of sultans, barons, and oligarchs, and seduce a woman with money.

Awesome! Well-written and sparkly
Revisado: 08-04-24
Great!!! Thoughtful, fun, energetic story that has all the glitz you want to escape for a little, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Strongly disagree w criticisms of the narrator by other reviewers. While the narrator does “overplay” the two antagonists in the story and her American accent veered “surfer,” she was otherwise GREAT. I found the (different) narrator for Sex and Vanity, the preceding book in this series, to be SO gratingly, ear-splittingly awful that I had to return it before I was even an hour in. But I loved Lies and Weddings!

Loved it! Could be titled “Wellness Junkie”
Revisado: 03-15-24
Loved it!! It’s pretty rare for me to actually laugh out loud while reading/listening to audiobooks, but this one has me chuckling throughout. The humor is so on point. Some of the twists were predictable, but I loved this book all the same. I think this book is best suited for people familiar with this world, because it just makes it so much funnier.

For Elderly People
Revisado: 02-29-24
I gave up on this book after about an hour and a half. The book seems to be a gentle primer on how to begin downsizing as a senior citizen specifically. Advice on different types of living situations, explanations that seem tailored to help seniors get into a decluttering mindset. Not what I was expecting.

Weird jazz/bass noise in the background is unpleasant
Revisado: 08-11-21
What an interesting conversation! The two speakers were very enjoyable to listen to, EXCEPT for the ambient background noise that was present throughout almost the entire podcast. It seems to be some sort of weirdly modified jazz music? But it sounds more like whale watching noises, or perhaps a large ocean liner sinking in the background while the main host is talking obliviously over the sound. It was distracting and frankly kind of unpleasant.

Fabulous! Engaging, effective, confidence-building.
Revisado: 07-07-20
I took German for 3 years, twenty years ago. This was the perfect starting point to pick the language back up (I skipped the first course.) The quiz format that builds up your knowledge base cumulatively is awesome - there’s constant repetition and review built into the lessons, without it feeling tedious. I am an auditory learner, so this made possible my long-held goal of trying to get some of my German language skills back! I can now watch TV shows in German with English subtitles, and match up what’s being said in German with the English, if that makes sense. I would need to expand my vocab before being able to watch only in German, but I feel that I’m well on my way. I hope a third volume gets released!!!

Good story, but narrator mispronounced a lot of names and words. Distracting.
Revisado: 05-15-20
The story was cute, but it was so annoying that the narrator couldn’t be bothered to learn how to correctly pronounce some pretty basic names, places, and words. (eg: “Mozart,” “MoMA,” and “Cum Laude”...Seriously!? Come ON!!)
—If you’re going to insist on putting on airs and keep calling it the “ReserVWAH,” as if you’re reading in French, then for heaven’s sake, don’t then mispronounce “couture,” “Vuitton,” and “Hermès” in practically the same breath. It’s jarring, and ruins the credibility of the book. So bad!!!!
Also thought narrator’s voice for Bee was totally wrong. But whatever, that’s less of an issue than learning how to pronounce the words you’re reading correctly.

What's with the cheesy musical interludes?
Revisado: 10-23-17
Moments of tension or romance throughout the book are interspersed with these annoying, cheesy melodic interruptions that would fade in and out between scenes. Did the producers think the writing on its own was too weak or lacking to convey the atmosphere of the scene in question? Cheap trick. Sleazy tunes.
