Sounded like Trump
Revisado: 03-11-25
Not my favorite book, but generally a good story. However, I made this comment because I just had to say that the narrator could've passed for Trump. Seriously, as soon as he started I did a double take.

Referencing Mountain Man
Revisado: 04-29-24
So...I feel really called out in this book. I'm about 3-4 hours from finishing the book, but if I don't say this now, I'll forget later. When Oliver mentions listening to zombie audiobooks and even refers to the Mountain Man series, my ambiguity about the book teetered over to "this book is actually pretty awesome". I feel more connected to the character, but also the author. Also, for the narrator....I've listened to a lot of zombie audiobooks, but the narrator for this one is so good I actually had to stop listening right before bed or I was afraid I'd have nightmares. I've never done that before. I am very, very impressed with all parts of this book so far. Highly recommend if you're on the fence.

Revisado: 01-27-23
The narrator reminded me of Christian Bale when he was Batman:, gruff and a little unpleasant. Otherwise it was good.

Historia
In the aftermath of the zombie pandemic Keith Taylor, noted pre-war author of post-apocalyptic fiction, traveled the world to interview survivors from every walk of life, culture and stratum of society, ranging from American political leaders to Scottish oil rig workers, from Mongolian miners to members of India's homeless underclass, each with their own tale of survival against an enemy that feels no remorse, fatigue, fear or mercy; only insatiable hunger.

Very Good
Revisado: 12-08-22
I'm glad there is another book in the same style as Max Brooks' World War Z. I wish this one could get a full cast production with more accurate accents and voices like the audible version of WWZ. The narrator did well overall, but there were some times where he sounded so similar I wasn't sure who was talking. So, I highly recommend if you liked the WWZ style.

It was always a joke. The what ifs and the planning were just conversations to have fun with. Who would be the first to go? Where would people be safe? Who would survive the zombie apocalypse? No one is laughing anymore. Awakening to a nightmare, Dan Foster is forced to flee his suburban Chicago home. Together with his wife Abby and little girl Katie, they begin a dangerous trek across the wintery Midwest in hopes to reconnect with his brother in the heartland of Wisconsin.

So American it Hurts...
Revisado: 11-10-22
I realize that many, if not most Zombie Apocalypse stories, are American. Being American myself, I understand the fascination and the context of a lot of them. However, this was so unequivocally American I hated it. It was not, by far, the worst zombie apocalypse story I've read - I mean, at least I finished it, right? But the character was always saying things like "red-blooded American" as if that were an appropriate excuse for his character to fall back on. On a separate note, it was, frankly, a little boring. The main characters were not interesting enough, and the descriptions were too gory. It felt a little out of place. The humor was blatantly childish and annoying. Lots of fart jokes. 😑 Anyway, it was a mediocre zombie story with very typical characters. I would have preferred if the main character was Lexi instead of Dan. Her story and character overall was more interesting. If you are thinking of purchasing it, I suppose it's worth a listen for casual listening times, otherwise, it's just not that interesting.

I Don't Even Want to Finish It
Revisado: 04-29-22
I really don't like this book so far. I'm only a few hours into the novel, but I hate the protagonist, I hate how absolutely vulgar it is. There's a difference between violent and dark (which I'm fine with) and vulgarity. it's like every other sentence is about sex, needing women, vulgar comments about anything, etc.
If you like that, fine, but I really don't at all and it makes me uncomfortable to listen to. Normally I don't do any reviews if I don't like it, but I had to explain why I don't recommend this book. Maybe a male reader could better understand these characters, but I just can't get over how disgustingly misogynistic and vulgar they are.
The person reading it is great though, I don't fault him.

I liked it
Revisado: 03-19-22
This was exactly what I wanted: average length, origin and beginning of apocalypse, a relatively believable character, and some closure without having to read a whole series. Perfect. Narration wasn't the best - the sound of recording was very obvious at times and occasionally the volume of static got high and was distracting. Overall, I recommend it if you want a decent zombie story but not too much investment.

Historia
The outbreak began in New York. Soon it had spread to the rest of the world. People were attacked and infected, and they died. Then they came back. Nowhere is safe from the undead. As anarchy and civil war took grip across the globe, Britain was quarantined. The press was nationalized. Martial law, curfews, and rationing were implemented. It wasn't enough. An evacuation was planned.

*Please Read* Reminds me of The Hobbit
Revisado: 01-26-22
If you read zombie books for action, this isn't your cup of tea. If you enjoy different genres of zombie books, you'll enjoy this one. I have listened to many zombie books in the past year, and I enjoyed the slower nature of this one. It is introspective and it is a diary entry. I have always enjoyed diary-styled books, so this was enjoyable. It DOES answer the origin question for this series, which I always appreciate. I know some people like the mystery, but I always like knowing how it started. If you are not used to a protagonist that is 100% British, you might not like this book. The protagonist reminded me of Bilbo Baggins. You have the same sort of character progression and growth in this book as Bilbo does in The Hobbit. As an American, I'm used to thinking like the Zombie Survival book - get the guns, feel responsible for saving anyone that can be saved even if it means death (but what a glorious death it will be!), etc. Not this book. If that is what you want, please move on. If not, I highly recommend this book. I plan to listen to the other books in this series as well.

A Bit Boring at the Beginning
Revisado: 06-28-21
It was excellent. But, it took a while for me to get into it completely. For those who understand military jargon and guns, you will not be bored by the opening, but I was lost at the beginning, so it took longer to persevere through. lol.

The narrator
Revisado: 04-11-19
I just want to say that the narrator, Leslie Bellair, is absolutely amazing. She’s got such a pleasant voice, and I love listening to her different accents for characters. I was only an hour into the book before I had to look her up. I hope she sees this, lol.
On a separate note, the book is brilliantly detailed and, once you get used to the new words, pleasant to read. I find Riesl’s character refreshing because she’s not a typical protagonist. But she’s wickedly awesome.
