a fun read
Revisado: 06-23-19
the first read was fairly decent, adventurous and youthful, with a few missteps in terms of characters. the author clearly has gained a better grasp of writing in this sequel and as such, the characters and writing itself have matured quite well. this keeps the sense of fantasy and adventure but adds in a sense of growing up.

LJ Smith meets Jim Butcher meets RL Stine
Revisado: 06-16-19
Fun and adventure of your old RL Stine books mixes with the sarcasm and laid back style of Jim Butcher and the drama and feelings of L. J. Smith's Vampire Diaries.
when I began this audio book, I didn't much care for it to be honest, but I was so intrigued by this secret world I continued on. about halfway through, I began to crave the next scene of the book! Great job Mr. Fisher for such a fast and adventurous pace!
pros: fun, interesting world building, nonstop action, and many parallels to every young boys day dreams. it also had that youthful and laid back tone, without feeling silly or condescending. best part? You can definitely see yourself as the main character and get lost in the fantasy.
cons: the frequent switch between first and third person can be jarring and confusing until you get used to it, and mild not really a spoiler but just to be safe SPOILER AHEAD!!!!
mild spoiler that isn't really a spoiler is follows:
Emily is every single annoying thing about the manic pixie dream girl all rolled up in a big ball of "OmG sO rAnDoM and EDGY" which really turned me off of her character initially. thankfully, she mellows out to become a well rounded and lovable part of the story.
all in all, it was an enjoyable read with some fun moments and even if you're not so interested in the beginning, give it a chance.

Complex and Twisted Tale, but it works!
Revisado: 06-15-19
While odd to hear European vernacular from an American narrator, the narrator did quite well to keep a decent pace and distinguish character voices.
as for the story, HOLY MOLY. Many authors try to have a deep and webbed storyline in their series, beginning in their first book, and fail or lose the plot, ending in a convolutedmess. Wixley succeeds in making an intriguing and complex story while still maintaining a balance.
I also appreciate that the tone and language of the story seems to mature alongside Adam. A boyish account in the early pages grows into an adult view in the later. Well done!
Speaking of Adam, he is a deeply flawed and somewhat selfish and egotistical character. This is a WONDERFUL thing, he is human. He is a realistic portrayal of a human being. He isn't perfect, but there are far too many books starring perfect characters! He is a character that, for myself, was quite relatable, and for that I applaud you Wixley! Many authors skim over the emotional disturbances of a neglected or abused child, you didn't and I appreciate it.
This was also a very refreshing take on a gay character. Too often a gay character is either deeply evil or more so, an absolute angel. The moral grey area of Adam's thoughts and actions are a great read and definitely a pleasant surprise. It was also nice to read a character that was not only gay, not only flawed, not only the MAIN character, but also, his sexuality is a small portion of his identity. Too many authors write any LGBTQ+ characters as caricatures of "gay culture" and it was quite nice to see a well rounded human being here instead of the "token gay"
All in all, an interesting, intriguing, and well paced ride, perfect to pass an afternoon with.

good stories, decent performances, terrible format
Revisado: 05-31-19
only issue is the chapters, each story should be it's own. the current format makes little sense
