Historia
On May 11, 1970, Henry Marrow, a 23-year-old Black veteran, walked into a crossroads store owned by Robert Teel and came out running. Teel and two of his sons chased and beat Marrow, then killed him in public as he pleaded for his life. Like many small Southern towns, Oxford had barely been touched by the civil rights movement. But in the wake of the killing, young African Americans took to the streets. While lawyers battled in the courthouse, the Klan raged in the shadows and Black Vietnam veterans torched the town’s tobacco warehouses.

I was given a copy of this book many years ago. I had never really read it. I have been moved beyond words. This book takes you through the full range of human emotion from sickening to hope in humanity. The raw honesty and willingness to dig deep and face the truth of our history is such a rare find.

Historia
Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other. Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate.

On the fence...

On one hand, I thought this book would never end. On the other hand, I kept coming back to see what was going to happen. I think it finished strong. There were notable and touching moments in the last few chapters that really resonated with me.
To me, it felt like there were too many unnecessary details in getting to the conclusion.
Overall, good story, good character development.
