Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Excellent story and performance!
Revisado: 09-16-24
The story was excellent, always fascinating, and unpredictable. A great blend of a great story about an individual and, more generally, what was going on historically that impacted the individual and story. The performance was equally excellent. Highly recommend!!

Historia
When President Theodore Roosevelt welcomed the country’s most visible Black man, Booker T. Washington, into his circle of counselors in 1901, the two confronted a shocking and violent wave of racist outrage. In the previous decade, Jim Crow laws had legalized discrimination in the South, eroding social and economic gains for former slaves. Lynching was on the rise, and Black Americans faced new barriers to voting. Slavery had been abolished, but if newly freed citizens were condemned to lives as share croppers, how much improvement would their lives really see?

Historia
Col. Samuel R. Johnson, U.S. Air Force, was shot down in April, 1966, while flying his twenty-fifth mission over North Vietnam. Shortly after his capture and imprisonment in the infamous Hanoi Hilton, Colonel Johnson was labeled a diehard by his enemies. His creative and innovative resistance of prison authority earned him banishment to the high-security prison unit where, unknown to U.S. military intelligence, Ho Chi Minh kept the eleven prisoners believed to be a serious threat to his war efforts.

A very good book for those interested in life in the gilded age
Revisado: 04-22-23
Well narrated, the books provides a very interesting insight into the lives of those in the gilded age. It provides extraordinary detail into dress, style, and manners of the ultra rich during that time, which becomes a bit much but does not really detract from the overall book. The author’s relationship to the Vanderbilts adds a lot to the book.
