Not much of a story. Same thing repeated over and over with lots of bad language. Disappointing.

Historia
In 1850s South Carolina, an enslaved woman named Rose faced a crisis: the imminent sale of her daughter Ashley. Thinking quickly, she packed a cotton bag for her with a few items, and, soon after, the nine-year-old girl was separated from her mother and sold. Decades later, Ashley’s granddaughter Ruth embroidered this family history on the sack in spare, haunting language. Historian Tiya Miles carefully traces these women’s faint presence in archival records, and, where archives fall short, she turns to objects, art, and the environment to write a singular history of slavery.

I thought this book would be a story about what happened to the dependents of the person who created the sack but it seems to say the same thing over and over in a different way. All speculation about the sack and what happened based on general history of the time and after 2 chapters it just did not seem to be going anywhere. Bought in a 2 for 1 sale and sadly cannot return.

Historia
Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Historical Reading
Revisado: 08-01-20
This book is someone reading a history book to you, not really a story one could get into. There was no development of the characters, and lacked the ability to pull you in. I tried to get into it for 3 hours and decided not worth the time. Too dry.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Not great
Revisado: 11-18-19
This book was not an enjoyable read. Somewhat disjointed, certainly not uplifting and not really sure there was a story. Got through it because I thought maybe the end would bring it all together - but no.

More of a text book than a story
Revisado: 03-25-19
This is more of a text book than a story about Mama. The psychology of animals in general is covered extensively in the book and not as much on the life and interaction with Mama. Starts out good but then gets too much like a psychology text book. I was looking for a more endearing story.

I'm not a mythology nut but this book was a nice diversion from what I normally read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The voice of the narrator is very easy to listen to and the story is enchanting. Easy listen and a great topic. Highly recommend.

A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Great but turns weird
Revisado: 06-05-18
This was a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed until near the end when it suddenly turns to graphic sex and suicide and then ends. I found myself saying 'what happened?'. It ruined the read and, in my opinion, was not needed. Really ends on a downer.
