This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

SO GOOD!
Revisado: 03-28-18
I absolutely loved this book! The story and writing is fantastic. I really felt invested in the characters; rooting for the good guys, and HATING the bad guys.
The voice work wasn't impressive. It didn't take away from the story, not distractingly bad by any means. But it did little more than convey the writing. For the most part the voices of different characters were fairly indistinguishable, just broken up with a few reasonably good accent here and there. But as I said, the voice acting still did a perfectly good job of presenting the excellent story.

A fantasy trudge
Revisado: 10-05-17
Good God this book was terrible. It's so painfully predictable I found myself literally exclaiming "duuuhhhhh" out loud several times a chapter.
Rather than coming up with actual ingenious plans and insights for characters like Richard to come up with, it would seem Goodkind simply made all the supporting characters vapid morons so the main characters would seem profound. This is the Blues Clues of fantasy, "Where's the clue?!" "Is that it right behind you?" "Oh dear spirits! You truly are the Seeker, Richard! You must have the gift!"
Speaking of "the gift", the use of this term isn't just inconsistent with the previous book, it's inconsistent within the same book! Is it a predisposition to learning magic? Do those with the gift already have innate magic? Only wizards have the gift! No, scorceresses have the gift too, BUT it's the lady gift. etc etc. "The gift" seems to change every few chapters, as the plot necessitates it.
The performance wasn't as bad as the writing, but that's not saying much. There are several characters who only speak "English" as a second language. Unfortunately the book is read as though every character (the narration included) is speaking a foreign tongue. The flow is halting and wooden with an unnatural cadence.
There are several more points I could make here but this book has already sucked 37 some odd hours of my life away and I choose not to give it anymore.

Historia
Invite Hannibal Lecter into the palace of your mind and be invited into his mind palace in turn. Note the similarities in yours and his, the high vaulted chambers of your dreams, the shadowed halls, the locked storerooms where you dare not go, the scrap of half-forgotten music, the muffled cries from behind a wall. In one of the most eagerly anticipated literary events of the decade, Thomas Harris takes us once again into the mind of a killer, crafting a chilling portrait of insidiously evolving evil - a tour de force of psychological suspense.

Excellent
Revisado: 09-07-17
Listening to this book has been an excellent experience. Daniel Gerroll's performance was wonderful, only being made more impressive by the wide variety of both accents and languages. Not to mention Mason Verger's, shall we say, "distinctive" idiolect.
The story is engaging and thrilling. Having seen the film adaptation years ago, this reader was pleasantly surprised by the plot differences the book had to offer.

Great story, difficult to hear
Revisado: 09-01-17
Unless you're listening through noise canceling headphones in a soundproof booth, you're going to lose the last couple words of every other sentence.
Muller's Dr. Lecter is quite good but many of the other characters' voices are not dissimilar enough and bleed together.
Aside from Mr. Muller's occational mumbling this is a very enjoyable listen.

Enthralling story! The narration is impeccable.
Revisado: 10-07-15
I was wildly impressed with Victor Bevine's performance throughout The Dark Elf Trilogy. His voices added greatly to the storytelling but were subtle and effortless enough to not sounds like someone "putting on a voice". It came across very naturally and really helped to keep the listening immersed in the story.
