Historia
This is the story of a close, loving family splintered by the violent ideologies of Europe between the wars. Jessica was a Communist; Debo became the Duchess of Devonshire; Nancy was one of the best-selling novelists of her day; the ethereally beautiful Diana was the most hated woman in England; and Unity Valkyrie, born in Swastika, Alaska, would become obsessed with Adolf Hitler.

Interesting book, wrong narrator
Revisado: 01-02-24
Very interesting, structured well but the narration was disappointing. I would have appreciated a British accent for a book by a British author about a quintessentially British topic. At the very least it would have been less distracting and frustrating to have names pronounced correctly.

Historia
It’s 2017, and Olga and her brother, Pedro “Prieto” Acevedo” are bold-faced names in their hometown of New York. Prieto is a popular Congressman representing their gentrifying Latinx neighborhood in Brooklyn while Olga is the tony wedding planner for Manhattan’s powerbrokers. Despite their alluring public lives, behind closed doors things are far less rosy. Sure, Olga can orchestrate the love stories of the one percent, but she can’t seem to find her own...until she meets Matteo, who forces her to confront the effects of long-held family secrets.

Funny, romantic, serious, substantial—all of these things and more
Revisado: 01-07-22
It's a mash-up of very readable fiction and insightful contemporary political and cultural observations. Manages to be cheeky and fun without being frivolous, also pointed and passionate without being polemical. Knowing and authentic.
Gonzalez is a good writer and storyteller — this a great yarn.
Things that I enjoyed/resonated with me: snarky observations of lifestyles of the rich, beautiful descriptions of life in an extended family, generational Latinx striving, the challenge of loving problematic parents, and a harrowing look at the exploitation and plunder of Puerto Rico centered on Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
I’m tickled that this is being made into a pilot for Hulu, can’t wait to watch.

Historia
For Francisco Cantú, the border is in the blood: His mother, a park ranger and daughter of a Mexican immigrant, raised him in the scrublands of the Southwest. Driven to understand the hard realities of the landscape he loves, Cantú joins the Border Patrol. He and his partners learn to track other humans under blistering sun and through frigid nights. They haul in the dead and deliver to detention those they find alive. Plagued by a growing awareness of his complicity in a dehumanizing enterprise, he abandons the patrol for civilian life.

This is something we all need to read and absorb today as we are encouraged to forget our humanity and ignore/demonize our fellow human beings.
