Historia
Christmas in Winterspell means ice skating, hot cocoa by the barrel, and frosted gingerbread houses. I was almost looking forward to it. The merriment screeches to a halt when two elves show up, claiming to have been sent by Santa himself, on a mission to track down an ancient grimoire. A grimoire with the power of Christmas itself woven through the pages. Without it, Christmas isn't happening, and Santa himself is in grave danger. Could Winterspell hold the key to saving Christmas?

cute but very short
Revisado: 04-01-25
Don't buy this book separately as it's part of the 5 book boxed set also available for 1 credit. It's a very cheerful holiday story, not really my type but I have no regrets. I enjoy this author even at her silliest, which this series may just be.

Historia
My life was going just fine by most standards. I ran a successful business in a tight-knit magical community, and lived just blocks from a beautiful lake and series of hiking trails. Then Selene showed up. According to some magical code I inherit my aunt's ancient familiar; a grumpy ten-pound cat with a broken filter. She fancies herself something of a saber-toothed tiger, and claims to have wrestled the thread of her ninth life from the hands of the Fates themselves—although, I'm pretty sure that last part isn't true. Almost positive.

Check the reviews for vol. 7 to 9. The cute cat has become a. sadistic domestic abuser and the situation is enough to make me sick.

Easy listening, non stressful
Revisado: 03-23-25
I truly dislike all of this author's main female characters. They are invariably commitment phobic and due to their lack of confidence make really bad decisions any time it really matters. Plus, the constant talk about food and "sweet treats" is annoying.

Historia
A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Despite the reviews, this was not at all funny. The ending made absolutely no sense at all. I can't believe I paid money for this book.

eye rolling stupid
Revisado: 03-09-25
Everyone behaved in the most incredibly stupid way, including the so called detective who never hesitated to mishandle or conceal evidence. I was shocked at the positive reviews these books received. Total waste of money.

Unless you love Biden, skip the author's note
Revisado: 02-09-25
Otherwise. this is an enjoyable book. His Trump Derangement Syndrome tells me I won't be reading his future work but I have no regret over the credit spent on this one. Too bad he didn't leave his politics at home. Because I believe in free speech, you should feel free to disagree.

I have been a fan of this author for decades but 3 chapters in I gave up on this one. The writing seemed childish and the narration was totally flat. If I had paid for it, I would demand a refund. Even free, I feel cheated.

Shades of domestic abuse!
Revisado: 11-13-24
In early books Selene was snarky and often funny. At this point, it is no longer funny. Selene's abuse of everyone, particularly Cora and her family, is so over the top that makes me sick. The familiar is clearly a psychotic abuser. If Cora is legally responsible for her actions it goes without saying that it is Cora's responsibility to control those actions in whatever manner works. Instead Cora is the typical enabler. This book needs a trigger warning. I have read "psychological thrillers" that were less violent and upsetting. The familiar, no matter her age or species, needs to be locked up so she can't hurt anyone or anything else. I am very upset

After the killing of a prominent mob lawyer, NYPD homicide detectives Jacob Jackson and Caitlin Grimes start receive chilling, written “rules” for how to commit the perfect murder. "Rule number one for the perfect murder: Evidence is your enemy. Leave none behind." Jackson (Reid Scott) and Grimes (Cobie Smulders) race to find the killer, setting them on a collision course with the city’s crime underbelly, and a perpetrator who seems happy to toy with them. “Rule number two. No crimes of passion. The perfect murder is always business, never pleasure.”

The acting was great, which adds so much to all of these Audible originals. I never saw the ending coming, although I pride myself on being clever. I highly recommend this entertaining story. Again, what an unexpected ending. wow.

Then narrator read the book with an obvious struggle, mispronouncing words, pausing or hesitating awkwardly and generally speaking the book without infliction or emotion. I couldn't even follow the story because of the reading. I gave up.
