Historia
Change is afoot at Kings Lake Central police station. A most unexpected new detective inspector takes up his post this Monday morning, and the oldest detective in the place takes a momentous decision. Around them, other officers are considering their own situations, and even the building itself seems to be facing an uncertain future. But life and death go on, nevertheless, and by lunchtime someone will make a grim discovery on the Norfolk saltmarshes. A stranger seems to have suffered a slow and agonizing death out there.

Another winner!
Revisado: 08-01-23
DC Sergeant is at it again — stepping on the toes of his betters as he single-mindedly leads his squad on the trail of master criminals in Kings Lake, Norfolk. Full of nostalgic gum-shoe detective work, local lore and colorful characters, this series is one of the best Audible has to offer. DC’s droll observations and dry sense of humor are perfectly captured by the excellent narration.
I highly recommend the DC Smith series, and the spin-off series, King’s Lake. Sit back and be prepared for laugh-out-loud enjoyment!

Faye has loved Jack since they were students at business school. Jack, the perpetual golden boy, grew up wealthy, unlike Faye, who has worked hard to bury a dark past. When Jack needed help launching a new company, Faye left school to support him, waitressing by day and working as his strategist by night. When the business took off, Faye stayed home and cared for their daughter.

Revisado: 11-15-22
A bit of a change from previous works by this author, her foray into this new territory yielded excellent results. The story was original, fast-paced, “steamy” and laugh-out-loud funny. Plenty of heroines, who are savvy and inspiring. Perfect pairing with the narrator. Quite a ride. Highly recommend!

Historia
At first glance, the death of media mogul “Big Bill” Argosy appears to be suicide. But his widow, Laila, thinks otherwise. Because Big Bill made enemies - lots of them. And he’d rather fight to the death than take his own life. When the authorities refuse to investigate, Laila turns to the one person who can see connections in the universe where others can’t: Zip Ono, a young private investigator - and practicing Buddhist. Zip quickly learns that there’s no shortage of suspects who might very well want Argosy dead.

Great fun! Zip Ono, lady detective, puts a new slant on solving cases by making use of many skills ignored by the run-of-the-mill Shylock. Original, inspiring and clever — I look forward to Zip’s next case! Highly recommend — especially for those of us fed up with the formulaic, repetitive and unoriginal police procedurals that just seem to re-chew the same elements. Quite original, mind-expanding, funny and fun!

A romp through the behind-the-scenes of NYC high society — funny and entertaining. I chose the book because i sooo lived Barbara Rosenblat’s narration of Anna Pigeon in Barr’s series. Worth the time.

Historia
Retired Cambridge professor Donald Aitcheson loves scouring antiquarian bookshops for secondhand treasures - as much as he loathes the scribbled marginalia from their previous owners. But when he comes upon an inscription in a volume of Robert Browning's poetry, he's less irritated than disturbed. This wasn't a gift to an unwitting woman. It was a threat - insidious, suggestively sick, and terribly intriguing.

Confused
Revisado: 06-01-20
I concur with Tara’s review: why was the protagonist killed in the first book of the series, only to be well and alive in the second? I found the first book to be confusing and disappointing — the second even more so. The author shows promise, but not really good, yet.

Revisado: 11-20-19
Sometimes Ms. Crombie paints her women offensively simplistic. Our heroine is so hot-headed and reactionary, she seems very immature to me. Why would a dish like Duncan Kincaid bother with her, I find myself wondering. And every story leans heavily on the preconception that men never acknowledge the competence of women. As for dialogue, most suspects spend a lot of time braying, “but Inspector, you can’t think that I killed him!!.....blah, blah, blah.” These timeworn devices are tiresome to me, and really differentiate the literary writers from the pulp fiction writers. Because that is what this is — fodder for the recycle bin. Too bad, because the story was good, and descriptions of the beauty of Scotland are travel-inspiring.
