Historia
In a small pocket of London, between the houses of No.77 and No.79 Eastbourne Road, lies a neglected community garden. It was a beautiful thing once, a little oasis in a bustling city for neighbors by day and the local foxes at twilight. Now it’s overgrown and neglected, an empty patch of greenery lost to time.

Sharing helps
Revisado: 04-28-25
I needed this sweet story about the healing power of gardens. Life is hard and it’s easy to keep other people at arms length to protect our own vulnerabilities. Yet, by sharing in the simple task of tending our physical environment we can learn to accept our differences and help each other in our difficulties. Then life gets a wee bit easier if we can bring a bit of happiness to someone else.

Fascinating
Revisado: 04-24-25
A fascinating retelling of an event with which we think we familiar. It could have happened this way. The multiple authors bring their unique perspectives to the characters; and, the reader is enriched by how their imaginations give new life to an old story.

Historia
When Ava Harrison receives a letter containing an unusual job listing one month after the sudden death of her ex-boyfriend, she thinks she’s being haunted. The listing—a job as a live-in caretaker for a peculiar old man and his cranky cat in Driftwood, Alabama—is the perfect chance to start a new life. A normal life. Ava has always been too fearful to even travel, so no one’s more surprised than she is when she throws caution to the wind and drives to the distant beachside town.

Historia
Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

Intriguing
Revisado: 08-15-24
The author explores the power of dreams and the shape which they give to our lives. At times scary, hitting close to home, we are shown the development of bad dreams and the sacrifices made in love to protect others. Altogether an intriguing exploration of imagination and life. The author did well with this story.

The Power of Books
Revisado: 08-02-24
This is a charming look at how books can shape our lives. It begins a bit slowly but stick with it. Its power develops with the characters—both those of the literature cited and of the readers. Looking at the ups and downs of life the story encourages the listener in his/her own attempts to pursue balance and joy. A masterful work by the author.

Average with a splash of difference
Revisado: 07-18-24
The author has come up with an interesting story which highlights the beauty and uniqueness of the San Juan Islands of Puget Sound. The characters are likable but the story moves along slowly. The main protagonist is a college student/aspiring reporter whose views and comments on the world are laughably stereotypical reporter. Overall the book is fairly interesting until the very end. Just when I thought the author would end with big real world irony the story turns gag-me-with-a-spoon sappy. Skip the two epilogues.

Heartbreaking truths
Revisado: 04-28-24
The author knocked this one out of the park! It is true to actual events of the time. This country has come some distance from those days; but still has a long way to go. The author references the words of Jesus that we all need to care for each other. If we did that the world would be vastly different.

Historia
To Christina Olson, the entire world was her family's remote farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. Born in the home her family had lived in for generations, and increasingly incapacitated by illness, Christina seemed destined for a small life. Instead, for more than 20 years, she was host to and inspiration for the artist Andrew Wyeth and became the subject of one of the best known American paintings of the 20th century.

Sad story about dull lives
Revisado: 02-03-24
This is a story about people trapped by circumstance and time. Fear of change prevents them from stepping beyond the known. Only the inclusion of Andrew Wyatt relying on their constancy adds a spark of intrigue. Even knowing he will produce one of the world’s most famous paintings doesn’t diminish that angle. The last chapter is worth slogging through the morass to get there.
