Good book marred by glitches in recording
Revisado: 07-11-18
Standard Crichton stuff. Very good.
There are continuous glitches with repeated playback segments. It's quite annoying. I'm amazed this passed QC.

Historia
Kate Freeman opened the front door of her vacation villa to a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A few moments later, fifty thousand paralyzing volts shot through her body. Her world went dark; and when she awoke, her family was torn apart forever. After months of agonizing physical therapy to heal the vicious wounds to her body, the Kate who emerged was no longer the loving mother, sister, and friend from before. The Kate who survived was something much different. Something much darker.

Too grisly and a weakish plot
Revisado: 07-11-18
I think I could drive a mack truck through a few of the plot holes (eg why does the partner not just sell some shares to cover his debt ffs!). There are also too many conyrived arguments invented to allow characters to explain their motivations. A lot of the susoense and surprise is generated by concealing discussions too. The plot is good in the main, but poorly executed IMO.
The details of the original ordeal suffered by the main character is over-detailed and repeated way too often. I have two warnings: if you are sensitive to gore, don't read it; if you enjoy those parts, seek therapy.

Truly exceptional
Revisado: 07-10-18
Once again, Flynn is amazing. I was hooked, almost from the very beginning, although I did find the start a bit slow. She cunningly weaves the present and past timeliness, leaving you in suspense at almost every change.

Historia
Four short novels from the author of The Fireman and Horns. 'Rain' explores an escalating apocalyptic event, as downpours of nails spread out across the world. In 'Loaded', a mall security guard heroically stops a mass shooting, but his story begins to unravel, taking his sanity with it. 'Snapshot, 1988' tells of a kid in Silicon Valley who finds himself threatened. And in 'Aloft', a young man parachutes for the first time...and winds up a castaway on an impossibly solid cloud.

Loving Hill more and mote
Revisado: 06-11-18
I've really enjoyed Hill's work, and this collection of novellas does not disappoint. His depth of imagination is superb, and his storytelling skills polish that off with aplomb.
I'm looking forward to decades of pleasure from Hill.

Revisado: 08-01-17
And he's definitely still on form. I've loved his work since my first read, but wish he'd write more! I do like his Michael Marshall books too, but as MMS he seems to have a much greater imagination. This book creates yet another wonderful tapestry including Hell, the Devil, 12 fallen angels, and a mushroom. Not to be missed!

When Kate Pierce-Keller’s grandmother gives her a strange blue medallion and speaks of time travel, sixteen-year-old Kate assumes the old woman is delusional. But it all becomes horrifyingly real when a murder in the past destroys the foundation of Kate’s present-day life. Suddenly, that medallion is the only thing protecting Kate from blinking out of existence. Kate learns that the 1893 killing is part of something much more sinister, and her genetic ability to time travel makes Kate the only one who can fix the future.

Too teenage girl orientated for me
Revisado: 07-26-17
I'm a sucker for time travel, but this wasn't for me. The story had quite a bit of potential IMO, and could have used a few twists I thought of, but seemed a bit loose in the end. I couldn't get over the teenage girl angst aspect, and that takes up at least half of the narrative.
It kept me going through a long road trip, so wasn't a total loss.

A very approachable way to learn Italian
Revisado: 02-27-17
I struggle with learning languages, but this book and the 5 others from book 1 make it fairly painless. Obviously you still need to work at it, but the format is successful, continuously reminding you of past words, just like learning it in real life situations.
I prefer to listen each morning as I exercise, it keeps me from getting bored. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND WHILE DRIVING, you will lose some attention to either the lessons or, worse, your driving. I tried this one book whike driving and had to start again at home because it did not take well. It needs a lot more attention than just listening to a story!
The associated reading pamphlet is useful (you have to download it separately), but I would much prefer to have the words I'm learning written as well. Italians' pronunciation can vary, even the two in the lessons differ, and it can get difficult to work out the exact word spelling.
Finaly, my tip if you are having difficulties is to slow down the playback. You get a better feel for pronunciation, and you get more time to respond. I sometimes pause if I need a bit of time to recall a word. I use 80%, and even slower if I'm struggling.
I have not tried book 2 & 3 or other publishers yet, but intend to in time. There are lots of free apps I play with to supplement my daily learning and get a broader grasp of the language as well.

Historia
There was a new shop in town. Run by a stranger. Needful Things, the sign said. The oddest name. A name that caused some gossip and speculation among the good folks of Castle Rock, Maine, while they waited for opening day. Eleven-year-old Brian Rusk was the first customer and he got just what he wanted, a very rare 1956 Sandy Koufax baseball card. Signed. Cyndi Rose Martin was next. A Lalique vase. A perfect match for her living room decor. Something for everyone.

I'm aleady a SK fan, buty this one surpasses all
Revisado: 08-11-13
If you could sum up Needful Things in three words, what would they be?
Wickedly evil mayhem
What did you like best about this story?
I loved this story for the same reasons I love all of King's stories: the rich detail in the characters, and the suspenseful plot, coupled with the sheer evil and mayhem parcelled out by the main character.
Have you listened to any of Stephen King’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to almost all of them. This one is best because I had the wonderful pleasure of hearing the accent that SK describes so very often in his books. The narrator also seemed to be very accomplished. Only later did I realise that Stephen King himself was reading this story to me. I was deeply moved. It seems silly, but it is true.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Be careful what you wish for ... you just might get it!
Any additional comments?
Thank you so very much, Mr King. Your reading of this fantastic story was a true pleasure. I may like a few of your books more, but listening to you read your own book so well is a connoisseur's delight!

A very good read
Revisado: 04-30-07
I am not a Grisham fan as such, but this story was very engaging. The characters were pretty realistic, although I guess the plot was a little contrived, but it was fairly rich in detail.
The narration was excellent IMO. The narrator managed many different voices for different characters, male and female, and they all seemed to fit well and enhance the story.

On a brisk autumn day, a 13-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: His father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America - and into another realm. One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery.

Loved it
Revisado: 02-07-06
One of my favourite books, and this was perfect. The whole family listened to it on a road trip over 3,000 kms, and we all loved it (11 - 41 yrs).
Yes, it does drag on, but King does that. The narrator lost nothing of the fine story I know and love.
