This haunting and propulsive debut follows a journalist's years-long investigation into his father's old classmate: former high school valedictorian Paul Volkman, who seemed destined for greatness after earning his MD and PhD from the prestigious University of Chicago, but is now serving four consecutive life sentences at a federal prison in Arizona.

In depth and touching.

The author turned over every fact and seemed to speak with all involved. An impressive work.
What stands out most is how he honors those that died in the end. Medication marketed to relieve suffering brought so much!
I look forward to the authors next book.

John Perkins has seen the signs of today's economic meltdown before. The subprime mortgage fiascos, the banking industry collapse, the rising tide of unemployment, the shuttering of small businesses across the landscape are all too familiar symptoms of a far greater disease.

Come on if we are to be a democracy we must know what our US foreign policy really is and then choose leaders that espouse and act on the foreign policy we desire.
This book should be read by everyone.

Great author and narrator!
Revisado: 10-19-20
Jim Kristofic’s prose draws you into the place and time he describes. It’s easy to forget the outside world for a while yet when you push pause you somehow feel more engage with the people, places, animals and fauna about you.
Aaaaand he may be even a better narrator.
So glad I’ve discovered his work.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

Incredible and amazing. Hackman is an amazing writer. He could write the phone book and it would be a page turner.
The way he weaves stories and moves in time is so well done. You don't get lost. You really know these people like their your family!!
Kudos and thanks Mr Hackman

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Historia
The Only Thing Worth Dying For chronicles the most important mission in the early days of the Global War on Terror, when the men on the ground knew little about the enemy - and their commanders in Washington knew even less. With unprecedented access to surviving members of ODA 574, key war planners, and Karzai himself, award-winning author Eric Blehm cuts through the noise of politicians and high-level military officials to narrate, for the first time, a story of uncommon bravery and terrible sacrifice.

War is hell
Revisado: 07-15-17
Eric is a very good writer. His books are rich in all the right details to tell the human raw story. This is a heartbreaking one that shows in vivid detail how brave men risk their lives for country and family and often pay the ultimate sacrifice. In this book it means US and Afghan men.
It also shows how we we should not blindly trust leaders to do the right thing. Some men risk others lives not for noble ends but for petty ends like pride and false valor.
And despite demonstrating stupidity and disregard for the lives of the warriors they are tasked to lead they are promoted up the military hierarchy.
This book should be required reading for all American citizens.
