Better Than Nothing

If the purpose of the book is to give a lasting impression. this one has. Harry leaves his youngest daughter to be burned alive in a building and he didn't even care. That's not Harry. Oh gosh, that's not Harry. One of the best things about the series is that it left you a good feeling. No good feelings here. The book is part 1 of 2 so it definitely left you dangling. It's like Butcher forgot half his books and the characters we loved.
The audio had audits that were disjointed. It's COVID so I guess it may have been a home studio.
I've been following Butcher for decades. This is his worst book yet and I'm not blindly overjoyed at this work just because it's been a while. Thank you and it is better than nothing.

Plot, obvious. Technically, did you complete the book and audio dub some parts in? Seriously, sometimes the voice was patched in so radically that it might have been a different person.
Messy divorce Jim? Harry's treatment of Bonnie was enough to make you want to backhand Harry with his staff. Time and again, Harry forgets her. He has two daughters and he gave birth to her! You think he would remember how Lashiel said how Bonnie was more powerful than he knew! Put effort into raising her? Naw, into the box. (Makes you want to hit him with his own staff, repeatedly.)
And too much self talk. Yes, Harry your horny. Yes Harry, your dense.
Jim, may I introduce you to Harry. Harry, Jim. Jim, you're a great great writer. Maybe you should review your last few books so you remember who Harry is.

For me, the first story was excellent. I love Oberon's Meaty Mysteries. The second? Good and I'm willing to explore more works. The third? I didn't make it all the way through the story. The author's way too dark with way too many cuss words. It doesn't leave the reader with a hopeful feeling.

Just as there is something important about to be read, the audio skips past a block of time to the next chapter. Don't buy until you get a clue of a possible correction. The story is good but having to decide to send it back or brave the huge gaps sucks.
