I think the writing and performance are outstanding!! The only thing that bothers me is the fact you never have anyone proof listen to the recordings. There are duplicated sentences/paragraphs which is annoying, but not that big of a deal. The thing that drives me crazy is mispronunciation of simple military terms and acronyms as well as other seemingly easy words. For example "politburo" which is the most senior decision making body in the PRC and largely the subject of this book as it was the Politburo that was not aware of the activities described. Could you PLEASE ask some "well read" people how to say the word "Politburo"? It is quite distracting to hear such a well known word hammered in this manner.

It is said that the right man in the right place at the right time can mean the difference between victory and defeat. This is the dramatic story of 68 soldiers in the US Army's Second Ranger Battalion, Company D - "Dog Company" - who made that difference, time and again. America had many heroes in World War II; however, few can say that, but for them, the course of the war would have been very different. The right men, the right place, the right time - Dog Company.

Battlefield Korea picks up in the middle of a brewing global conflict, as the Chinese look to capitalize on Russian intervention in the Ukrainian civil war. The surprise attack there has NATO in chaos, false headlines barrage the Internet, and the war in Ukraine seems all but lost. Will this distraction keep America from intervening in Asia? When the Chinese begin to provide the North Korean regime with additional fuel, hard currency, and weapons, will America still be able to honor its treaty obligations in Asia?

I have have read virtually all books in this genre as well as parallel histories and bios from last fifty years. I participated in the Cold War as an Army officer. With all that said, I understand these geopolitical and military situations and find it excellent ground to build fiction upon. I have really have enjoyed this series thus far and will finish the last two titles this week.
Excellent writing and narration.

Historia
The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern learner can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

I think it’s safe to say most of the people who choose to read this book already know the broad strokes of the north African campaign. For those who want to know more this book is a fantastic listen, and will fill-in a lot of detail you were not aware of. It offers great detail from all levels of command as well as from the soldiers view of the campaign.
I enjoyed this book and performance very much and recommended for fellow military history fans like me.

Hampton Sides' superb account of this epic clash in the Korean War relies on years of archival research, unpublished letters, declassified documents, and interviews with scores of marines and Koreans who survived the siege. While expertly detailing the follies of the American leaders, On Desperate Ground is an immediate, grunt's-eye view of history, enthralling in its narrative pace and powerful in its portrayal of what ordinary men are capable of in the most extreme circumstances.

Excellent history and story
Revisado: 06-15-22
It’s difficult to write something as meaningless as a review in regard to what these marines, soldiers and naval personnel did in this operation.
The conditions, opposition and leadership (good and bad) create a story that is unmatched in American military history.
As a former infantry soldier with deep pride in the US Army, my respect for the US Marines is deep, complete and untiring both in regard to this operation and their entire history.

As Darwin famously observed, the beaks of each generation of Galapagos Island finches change to accommodate shifting food resources, allowing the birds to survive by adapting their capabilities to the new environment. Today's business people should take note: In the post-crisis economy, traditional career strategies spell professional extinction, but the fluid new "gig economy" offers tremendous potential for anyone willing to adapt.

Excellent and Current Marketing Advice
Revisado: 09-20-20
I run a mid sized, successful marketing firm for service businesses. This book is extremely well written and offers outstanding advice to owners of business service firms. I found the information to be well up to date with current thinking and practice.
The frustrating thing about the subject and the book reflects this is the lack of commitment and follow through regarding marketing by senior management. My firm has never worked with a Fortune 500 firm, our clients are much smaller and in one industry (construction) but we have never once had a client that embraces all that marketing can do and commits themselves long term to success with marketing. The budgets spent by every firm we represent are woefully below what really is needed to break through the noise - get noticed and stay noticed.
We can prove that higher expenditures are and will be beneficial as part of a enterprise wide commitment to marketing but everybody inevitably gets busy, focus on the short term success that marketing brings and then pulls back. We would love for clients to stay the course and keep pushing but the time demands of understanding and supporting a broad based marketing effort is just too complex and it always stops like a wave crashing on the beach and is not followed through. The willingness to understand that initial success is the first wave of ongoing growth fades as people and productive resources get backlogs. They don't believe the gains are real and long lived and rarely staff up and expand as really needed and bizarrely (to our thinking) cut marketing until they work their way out of the backlog.
I understand that many business owners want to achieve and stay at a certain size, and that explains some of this but the issue is you not only have to commit to marketing, you have build your business processes and mindset around marketing if you want to get to the top. Having a great website. Slowdowns in expenditure are fine to regroup and build resources but real marketing effort should never, ever stop.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

I had high hopes - but was sadly disappointed
Revisado: 05-17-20
The audio performance was excellent. I love the podcast feel using archival material as well as the actor reenactments. All of that was fantastic!! If it were not for the energy and conviction he brought to it, I would have stopped listening long before I did. I kept thinking he knew the best part of the work was coming up soon, and he would share some insight that would benefit the readers. I kept listening... and all I could think while complete disappointment swelled like a bad case of a gas after judging a bean casserole contest was how much Malcom could have benefited from a a good editor.
The fact is the premise alluded to in the title and the book description are wholly unsupported by the work. To say the series of stories he knit together were disjointed, insults the word disjointed. In my mind I can see the word "disjointed" protesting valiantly at the thought ITS MEANING is being used to describe this book - oh the pain as I watch that word cry is tearing me apart. The word "disjointed" is begging me to instead use "unconnected" or "disorganized" but I say no... NO!!! This "book" truly lacks a logical and convincing flow and is merely a vehicle to promote some sort of weak, weird and impractical agenda. I guess we are supposed to ban guns and bridges because some people have a bad day?
I frequently tell people that I love books. I purposely seek out points of view in my reading to challenge my own beliefs as it helps me understand the world and evolve my thinking to a better position. The only thing this book taught me is that techniques from podcasting definitely have a place in the audio book world. I just wish he would have explored better the fascinating subject of interacting with strangers in a meaningful way that gave the reader something to take away.

Historia
A major American intellectual makes the historical case that the reforms of the 1960s, reforms intended to make the nation more just and humane, instead left many Americans feeling alienated, despised, misled - and ready to put an adventurer in the White House. Christopher Caldwell has spent years studying the liberal uprising of the 1960s and its unforeseen consequences. Even the reforms that Americans love best have come with costs that are staggeringly high - in wealth, freedom, and social stability - and that have been spread unevenly among classes and generations.

Extremely interesting and thought provoking
Revisado: 02-23-20
I lived through the entire span of history discussed and think the author offers a valid assessment of where we are and how we got here. I don't think there is good news here for anybody in the way this situation is evolving as it's clear nobody got what we needed from the past 50 years of change. I'd love to see a younger generation of leaders come forward and see if there were a way to bring a new balance of understanding that could create true unity and true equality for all people both in fact and in law. It would seem that actual freedom of speech should be a big part of the solution, I just hope it's not too late for that honest discussion.
