Historia
Hopewell Cottage Little Lost Island, Maine. Old, pretty cottage to rent on a small island. Springwater, blueberries, sea glass. August. So reads an ad on Lottie Wilkes’ and Rose Arbuthnot’s children’s preschool bulletin board. When the mothers arrive on the island, they are transformed by the salt air; the breathtaking views; the long, lazy days; and the happy routine of lobster, corn, and cocktails on the wraparound porch. By the time of the late-August blue moon, real life and its complications have finally fallen far, far away.

Boring
Revisado: 10-15-20
I kept waiting for some kind of really interesting drama or conflict and it was boring. The characters were not interesting. The narrator’s voice was high, especially when reading the kids parts, and underscored the syrupy story.

Narrator Spoiled It for Me
Revisado: 01-23-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I found the narrator's voice really grating. Her Churchill voice and German accent were both heavy-handed and dreadful. I guess imitating Churchill's blustery style and a German accent are more "authentic" but I don't want them blasting away in my head
Who was your favorite character and why?
I like Maggie, of course.
Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Duerden’s performances?
No way.
Do you think The Prime Minister's Secret Agent needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I think this series has more life in it.
Any additional comments?
I love the historical setting. I'm looking forward to the next one with Mrs. Roosevelt. Of course, I'll be reading the hard copy!

Historia
In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

One of the best books I've read (or listened to)
Revisado: 01-18-14
Where does The Signature of All Things rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I would put this book in my top three.
What did you like best about this story?
The story was interesting with unexpected turns, thought-provoking ideas, and unusual (but not unlikeable) characters. The historical setting added more depth to the story for me.
Which character – as performed by Juliet Stevenson – was your favorite?
The main character, Alma Whittaker, has a brilliant scientific mind and a passion for botany. She has had what could be called a hard life, but all the while she was searching for answers and trying to understand the natural and spiritual world around her and the people in her life (while balancing what she contemplates with her rational mind).
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There were several but I don't want to give away any plot twists.
Any additional comments?
This was a beautifully written book and I was sorry when it ended.

Not My Favorite Book in My Favorite Series
Revisado: 07-30-12
Would you consider the audio edition of The Brutal Telling to be better than the print version?
I loved listening to this book, more than I imagine I would reading the print version. The narrator has a great voice and brings the French accents and phrases to life.
What other book might you compare The Brutal Telling to and why?
Since Chief Inspector Gamache is a poetry-quoting policeman, I am reminded of P.D. James' cerebral, poetry-writing detective Adam Dagliesh. The dark psychological thriller aspect of the plots reminds me of some of Ruth Rendell's novels. Gamache is unique in his "normalness." He has a wife, grown children and he's happy, even though he delves into the darker regions of the human psyche.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wanted to listen to this whole series -- let alone this book -- all in one sitting, except I'm trying to stretch them out a bit and savor them.
Any additional comments?
This particular book ended with a number of loose ends, unlike the previous books in the series. I was a little confused and dissatisfied. I have been assured by a friend, however, that the next book in the series clears up some of the ambiguity. I just love this series, the characters, the setting, learning about the culture in Quebec, feeling the cold weather. I think it's brilliant.
