I know she says this book has been a source of personal therapy, so she can say whatever she needs. However, she throws the term "climate change" around to blame for everything with zero evidence or reference...making it a little hard to believe.
On the other hand, her long, beautiful descriptions of the Creede region kept me going. Her emo reflections of her life are often heart breaking, and yet artistically framed with her emo reflections from the ranch.
I give her much credit for all of the neverending manual labor it takes to run a ranch and her deep devotion to animals.

Should be labeled as young adult fiction

I look forward to when Christian fiction catches up with Christian music. I only finished the book to try and support Christian writers. It was full of two dimensional characters, two female leads that were immature and screechy, and a Scooby Doo plotline. There wasn't even a nod to basic civics in the law enforcement and investigation aspect. The hero cop could successfully be sued by half of the other characters. I'm glad there are people trying to offer this; but it really should be labeled for young adults.

I heard Louie speak at Glorieta when I was in college and the Lord used his presentations to get through to me how much He loved me. Even though I had been a Christian for years, I hadn't truly heard that in a way that sunk in. Now, decades later, God is speaking again through Louie and this book. Messages I already know in my head but that need to sink into my heart and show up in my actions. my giant has been slayed by my Savior and it has to fall. I hope you find the same healing when you listen.

Depressing and Anti-Christian

There were moments when this book was charming and beautifully melancholy; which kept me listening to the end. However, several sections of the book were just depressing. His championing of his own narcissism starts off a bit tongue-in-cheek, but is pretty tedious by the end. He criticizes people for not being more authentic and then regularly bashes those who express anything Christian, conservative, or with southern manners or culture.
In the end, the image this book brought to mind was an old drunk clown or department store Santa, smoking a cigarette and cursing at the world around him.

There are several places in the story where we get long recaps from previous books. Makes it feel redundant. It dragged enough that I took a break from it for awhile and just came back to finish it off. I'll try one more in the series and see if it picks up steam again.

I think Cameron has found Clancy's recipe for the eleven secret spices. I love that we returned to John Clark's origin story (as it was one of my favorite stories from Clancy.) I love that the gang is all included, plus a couple of new members that fit well. And I especially love that President Ryan doesn't spend hours navel gazing about being president. He just likes the Navy Stewards' coffee and gets on with the action.

It's been hit or miss so far, post-Tom Clancy, depending on which author is up...but this is a hit for sure.

Most of the reviews are really positive, so I feel like I must have read a different book entirely.

Here's my advice, if you don't like it in the first 30 minutes, give up. I wish I had. But because it was Ted Dekker, I was sure it was going to get better. It did not.

The first 2/3 of the book is tedious internal dialogue which makes it feel like the plot is stuck in molasses. The last 1/3 is a rambling sermon about how we should all quit caring about others and ourselves so we can be our true selves, which we only are when we sleep...or something. It's a voodoo-like hodgepodge of Christianity, Zen Buddhism, humanism, and mysticism. The "forgiveness" aspect that moved most of the reviewers was just a tiny, improbable scene that isn't even fully developed.

With so many positive reviews, there must be something there I didn't get; but whatever it is...I didn't get it from the beginning.

One reason I stuck it out was I am hoping the rest of the trilogy is better. I was in the mood for a good Ted Dekker trilogy and didn't want to miss anything in book one. However, if the second one starts off as painful...I'll have to sit the rest out it out.

Not bad for a first novel. Sparks of brilliance for future books. The narrator's stunted, nasal reading gave the story an amateur feel. I'm surprised Ben didn't read his own story.

Vince Flynn is missed, but his creation lives on. I wouldn't have guessed this was written by someone else. Good story.

Sometimes it felt like an abridgement. It's nice to have a pg-13 story once in awhile, but it also cost a bit of depth.
