Historia
Ty Seidule grew up revering Robert E. Lee. From his southern childhood to his service in the US Army, every part of his life reinforced the Lost Cause myth: that Lee was the greatest man who ever lived, and that the Confederates were underdogs who lost the Civil War with honor. Now, as a retired brigadier general and Professor Emeritus of History at West Point, his view has radically changed. From a soldier, a scholar, and a southerner, Ty Seidule believes that American history demands a reckoning.

Mind… blown!
Revisado: 01-22-24
I never knew much about REL. I guess I believed the narrative that he was against slavery and that it was with heavy heart that he left the US Army to support the army of the confederacy.
I am so glad to have heard reference to his letters and writings of others during this time. It helps learning the true history.
As someone that never understood the big deal about the monuments to Lee.
Having had many family members fight in the Civil War and know my lineage connected to Abraham Lincoln (I would be a 1st cousin, 6 times removed), I am truly embarrassed and ashamed of my lackadaisical ignorance.
This book has sincerely changed me and I will be forever grateful!

My words found a voice
Revisado: 12-17-22
“There can’t possibly be anything else she can touch on to resemble my experience,” were my thoughts as one chapter lead to the next. And then, there was.
My daughters grew up watching me fake my way through one day after the next. Now they are grown and the memories they have of that time are something they are trying to cope with and learn from.
My two daughters are everything to me and were as I was raising them as a single mom. I made some mistakes and I will carry that guilt the rest of my life. Unfortunately, my youngest wants space to figure out her way through her childhood on her own. It breaks my heart everyday but I feel I can see things from their perspective a little better now. I bought both girls a copy and hope maybe they can understand me a little better.

Historia
A Mouthful of Air is a compassionate and wrenching portrait of Julie Davis, a young wife and mother torn between the love she feels for her family and the voice in her head that insists they’d be better off without her. We meet Julie several weeks after her suicide attempt, on the eve of her son’s first birthday. Grateful to be alive, Julie tries her best to appreciate every moment — “this tree, that passing car, the pretzel guy up ahead on the corner. She has, for whatever reason, been given a second chance” — but her emotional demons are unrelenting.

Describes the indescribable
Revisado: 05-02-22
The words in my head have found air. Though not same drastic ending or same stage in life, this has, in times, been my life.
This is the first time I’ve heard anyone come close to describing what my thoughts are like when they feel undesirable. The first time anyone has nailed how it feels to be in that dark, deep abyss behind the loving eyes and happy smile.

A misfit kid at the best of times, Mishka Shubaly had his world shattered when, in a 24-hour span in 1992, he survived a mass shooting on his school's campus then learned that his parents were getting divorced. His father, a prominent rocket scientist, abandoned the family, and their home was lost to foreclosure. Shubaly swore to avenge the wrongs against his mother but instead plunged into a magnificently toxic love affair with alcohol.

Fulfilled Promises
Revisado: 09-21-21
I am not a professional literary reviewer. I am barely a professional anything, but am a lifelong enabler. I can’t even say why I chose this book other than I thought I should listen to it.
Midway through the book I began to hear my husband’s story being told to me. The names and places were different. The original promises or oaths he made throughout his life have been different, but it was like listening to his story and almost understanding it for the first time.
My husband is a addict. He has been sober several years now but the road to sobriety was long and it’s been hard. I felt myself thinking back to all the unfulfilled promises he’s made, to me and to others, including himself, over the years. He is still working on the relationship with his father and coming to terms with much of his past. Through hearing the author finally find peace, I felt like I misunderstood many of the times I’d been let down. I now understand a little better that this is just part of the journey, his as well as mine. It some how makes some of the long forgotten promises I’d been made seem fulfilled.
As a reader (or listener), I wish I’d known what
became of Riley and, especially, Allison. As the wife of a man who lived a similar story, I was glad that if Mishka did know, that he didn’t acknowledge so and let their role in his life end where it had.
Thank you for sharing your story. It was small piece of healing I hadn’t realized I still needed to better understand my husband’s story.

Blown Away!
Revisado: 12-21-18
Wife of an addict, this story touched me in a way I never expected it to. I cried through the preamble, laughed and cried in shock and amazement throughout the diary, and cried again through the end.
I thought of my husband’s demons and struggles I’ve discovered since meeting him. Though I still don’t fully understand (I’m not sure that even he does completely), It helps me grasp where some of his thoughts might be coming from and why he might do some of the things he does. I started to appreciate the fight and he goes through to be the best man he can be each day... in each moment and choice he makes.
It reminded me that in every life a little rain must fall. But after the rain... the rainbow.

What a fantastic book! Her humor and thoughts are so similar to mine... it’s almost exactly what I’d write (if she hadn’t beat me to it) 😉 Absolutely a new favorite!!!
