As a Lovecraft afficionado, Laird Barron is an improved H.P. Lovecraft for the 21st century. Ray Porter does a terrific job too.

Listener beware.

You CANNOT experience this in a lit room with your eyes open. Not while jogging. Not while hoovering.

You can only experience this laying or sitting down alone in a darkened room with your eyes closed and good over-ear headphones. Preferably noise cancelling.

You should also have consumed the basic Lovecraft to enjoy this. many characters will only be dropped in with a hint and the (valid) expectation that you know who they are.

if you do these two things, and you PAY ATTENTION (realizing that the sounds are not mere SFX but clues to the story), you will have a blast that is beyond words.

Offers a horror thrill ride like no other.

Disastrous adaptation

Buyer beware!

The book is filled with sections like:

"This code segment doesn't quite look right.

...

There -- isn't that better? Keeping those obvious differences in mind as we move along, consider also the following snippet.

...

Now that you've seen first-hand what [some advanced concept] entails in practice, watch me change things up from here..."

The narrator and the author both seem highly competent in isolation. But someone somewhere (looking at you Manning) made the fatal decision to 'just leave out the code' for the narrator's script.

Like the very people who willingly buy programming audiobooks wouldn't WANT to be exposed to something as uncouth as -- good heavens -- code read out loud!

The fact that the author has skillfully employed code snippets to make vital points in the original text is laudable. With those portions omitted, however, nothing tangible whatsoever remains.

Excellent guide to MODERN stoicism

As a short introduction to the contemporary psychology and ethics which borrow from the greatest insights of ancient stoicism, this was a GREAT listen!

For anyone primarily interested in the actual philosophies of the ANCIENT stoics, however, I would recommend Googling "Philosophy without any gaps", and listening to the episodes on the ancient stoics there instead.

While this guide "only" includes adapted portions of the best ingrediens of stoic philosophy which work TODAY, that's not exactly a drawback for the purposes of this book.

Indeed, the original versions of ancient stoicism would REQUIRE some pruning in order to be possible to emulate today in any useful sense to begin with.

As such, this guide does the job well, and further reading is recommended by the end of it.
