so his basic argument is dualism is absurd - free will must emerg from the physical systems we comprise. but a complex physical system can be more than the sum of its parts so we can be confident "we" exert free will from some kind of top down structural influence which he calls "meaning". what? no support or explanation for what that mechanism is.

timely book - great narrative. awful sound quality

really impressive feat - a comprehensive straight through narration of 4 billion years of evolution, leading up to the present dawn of AI. of course vast simplifications and in some cases speculation but overall the right level of detail for most interested non-expert readers.

the recording was terrible though. base narration was fine but there were countless cuts/edits of re-recorded content which had completely different tone from the original recording. the edits were deeper in tone and almost muffled - it was hard to tell if it was even the same narrator. personally I found it jarring.

excellent next level explanation of physics

best non-expert/non-math description I've read of quantum field theory and quantum gravity and how they (may) relate to each other and more traditional explantations of quantum particle physics and relativity. intuitive and clear without oversimplifying or resorting to furmulae. great.

why generalists triumph? more like why a statistically insignificant number of generalists triumph as supported by well written but anecdotal and counterfactual evidence. I guess this is the kind of book that makes some people feel better about being undiscovered creative geniuses toiling away unsuccessfully before they find their true calling. it made me feel terrible.

great but odd accents by narrators

thought provoking, well researched and written. but narrator had odd practice of imitating tone and accent of every quoted individual. I found it super distracting. his especially pronounced Australian, German and English accents sounded cartoonist and stereotyped
