Historia
Myrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight, married just one year later, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. Medgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation, lynching, violence, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.”

Tragic, heartwarming and uplifting
Revisado: 05-20-24
It sometimes feels like nothing has really changed but that’s not true. As far as I know, there are no more laws enforcing segregation. And we did elect Obama. And there is so much undone that it’s hard to see true equality ever happening. But it was hard to think of desegregation never happening and 3 hard to make it happen, but it did. So right now I feel kind of peaceful. (Love your show, Joy.)

A good read

This is the third book I’ve read about SBF, plus listening to Podcasts. I think part of the fascination is the "Why? No one can answer that but this book makes some very reasonable suggestions. I recommend it.

Historia
From a New York Times investigative reporter, this “authoritative and devastating account of the impacts of social media” (New York Times Book Review) tracks the high-stakes inside story of how Big Tech’s breakneck race to drive engagement—and profits—at all costs fractured the world, and is “an essential book for our times” (Ezra Klein).

Historia
Exposing the many lies told on and off the psychoanalyst's couch, Lying on the Couch gives listeners a tantalizing, almost illicit glimpse at what their therapists might really be thinking during their sessions. Fascinating, engrossing, and relentlessly intelligent, it ultimately moves listeners with a denouement of surprising humanity and redemptive faith.

I think this may be the sixth time I’ve read/listened to this book. Right now I needed relief from the news, political analysis and history. It’s a great story, but it’s also full of so much wisdom. I actually recommended it to my current therapist.

Historia
Navigating poverty, violence, and instability, a young James Plummer had two guiding stars - a genius IQ and a love of science. But a bookish nerd is a soft target, and James faced years of bullying and abuse. As he struggled to survive his childhood in some of the country’s toughest urban neighborhoods in New Orleans, Houston, and LA, and later in the equally poor backwoods of Mississippi, he adopted the persona of “gangsta nerd” - dealing weed in juke joints while winning state science fairs with computer programs that model Einstein’s theory of relativity.

A beautiful and inspiring book
Revisado: 01-25-22
Even though I knew Dr. Oluseyi would get his Ph.D, I was still in tears when he finally did. I am so grateful to the many Black people who are explaining to us white people what we should have known, but managed not to really see. The book is a page turner, and I even almost kind of understood some of the science. Please keep writing.

Great douse, but last lessons need revision
Revisado: 01-14-22
Unfortunately, the positive evaluation and hopeful predictions of the last few lessons are kind of heart breaking now (2022.) So much is much worse than when they were written. I would either drop those lessons or add one describing the deterioration, in so many ways, that has occurred since then. I really was enjoying this course and learning a lot up until the talk of how successful the Hong Kong takeover has been. That didn’t last, did it?

Historia
Irvin D. Yalom has made a career of investigating the lives of others. In this profound memoir, he turns his writing and his therapeutic eye on himself. He opens his story with a nightmare: He is 12 and is riding his bike past the home of an acne-scarred girl. Like every morning, he calls out, hoping to befriend her, "Hello Measles!" But in his dream, the girl's father makes Yalom understand that his daily greeting had hurt her. For Yalom, this was the birth of empathy; he would not forget the lesson.

Great book, wrong reader
Revisado: 10-28-21
I really enjoyed the book, but was continually irritated by the accent, whatever it’s supposed to be. Irv doesn’t talk like that. My memory of him is that he has no particular accent, except, perhaps, Californian. The reader seems to have some sort of northeast, Jewish accent, perhaps New York. I guess it’s fine if you don’t actually know Irv, but to me, the reader sonds much less sophisticated and educated.,which is a misrepresentation.

Historia
Gripping and compassionate, Land of Big Numbers traces the journeys of the diverse and legion Chinese people, their history, their government, and how all of that has tumbled—messily, violently, but still beautifully—into the present. Cutting between clear-eyed realism and tongue-in-cheek magical realism, Chen’s stories coalesce into a portrait of a people striving for openings where mobility is limited.

He visited dozens of countries, meeting with politicians and activists confronting the same nationalism and authoritarianism that are tearing America apart. Along the way, he discusses the growing authoritarianism of Vladimir Putin, and his aggression toward Ukraine, with the foremost opposition leader in Russia.

Great book, heartbreaking ending
Revisado: 06-14-21
I learned a lot reading this book. It’s also really well written, and had to put down. However, after reviewing everything that has been going wrong, the last chapter offers a possible hopeful scenario f recovery. But everything is so much worse now than even six months ago, that hopefulness breaks my heart. You see, I don’t think you can have a democracy if a large portion of the population, and a larger portion of elected officials, are against the basic principles of democracy.
