Sy Montgomery's popular 2011 Orion magazine piece, "Deep Intellect", about her friendship with a sensitive, sweet-natured octopus named Athena and the grief she felt at her death, went viral, indicating the widespread fascination with these mysterious, almost alien-like creatures. Since then Sy has practiced true immersion journalism, from New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, pursuing these wild, solitary shape-shifters.

SyMontgomery’s experience was magical for her, and it came through clearly in her narration. I learned a lot, it was a very uplifting memoir.

What a marvelous listen!
Revisado: 02-05-23
The classic story is so worth one’s time on its own, but to listen to the incomparable Sissy Spacek perform it is a gift to oneself. Love-love-loved it, every last word. I’m recommending it to everyone I know!

A Tough but Meaningful Listen
Revisado: 12-28-22
I loved a recovering alcoholic once - a forbidden love - who said if we went any further with our “mustn’t” relationship, he was afraid he would start drinking again. Hearing Perry’s very painful, difficult story reminded me why I was able to stop pursuing a love I couldn’t have because ultimately I wanted my lover to live and thrive, even if not with me. Likewise, it’s vital that Matthew Perry lives and thrives too. Thanks for this tough but important memoir.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Wow — so brave and so important
Revisado: 07-02-21
While difficult to keep track of all the many names and titles of people Ronan Farrow brought to light in this very thorough story, it matters so very much to listen to or read. Will it change how powerful men sexually abuse women in the workplace, especially in entertainment and media? This should be required reading/listening for anyone wanting a career in the news business. It’s a cultural high mark, even though it exposes such brutal and ugly truths. Ronan defines investigative journalism. Congratulations to him for his bravery and honesty.

Historia
On October 5, 2017, the New York Times published an article by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey - and then the world changed. For months, Kantor and Twohey had been having confidential discussions with top actresses, former Weinstein employees, and other sources, learning of disturbing long-buried allegations. But nothing could have prepared them for what followed the publication of their Weinstein story. With superlative detail, insight, and journalistic expertise, Kantor and Twohey take us for the first time into the very heart of this social shift.

Left Me Breathless
Revisado: 09-28-19
“She Said” is important beyond words. We all need to hear the story itself about what women have endured and kept silent how badly they were abused by men with power. Equally interesting and compelling is the explanation of the intense process of good and correct investigative journalism. So very glad I listened to this book. Am recommending highly to all my friends.

Historia
More than any other presidency, Barack Obama's eight years in the White House were defined by young people - 20-somethings who didn't have much experience in politics (or anything else, for that matter) yet suddenly found themselves in the most high-stakes office building on earth. David Litt was one of those 20-somethings. After graduating from college in 2008, he went straight to the Obama campaign. In 2011 he became one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history.

David Litt knows how to craft story out of episodes and events. And he’s very funny. Really enjoyed the Listen although in the last two chapters, he gets a little sing-song. But it’s a good one, good for the commute!

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

The Lies Drew Me Into
Revisado: 03-05-17
I got the book because I wanted to get a jump on the HBO series and didn't expect it to be Australian. Not being used to the Aussie accent, I almost gave up on it at first. But I'm glad I stayed with it. The characters and their angles drew me in. Good storytelling all the way through.
