This story is an excellent example of how a great writer is not limited by the size of the story. This story catalogues a battle for the North that establishes much of the setting for the Age of Madness Trilogy. It is a much more focused story than Better Served Cold, which reads like a series of novellas. This story instead dives into the details of one battle and makes Abercrombies case for how war affects the participants. In short, it is in turn thrilling, horrifying, and melancholy, while never losing track of the key characters and their motivations. If this was written about a real war, we would be comparing Abercrombie to Hemingway. I loved Best Served Cold, but I was impressed more by this.

Very strong work in the fantasy genre. It takes a clash of houses classes story ala Game of Thrones and manages not only to make the sex and violence as compelling as any in the genre, but has frequent moments of laugh out loud brilliant humor. Think GRRM meets Terry Pratchet (in a good way). The author has such a way with cutting a sprawling story into little important vignetes, that many of the chapters could stand alone as meaningful short stories by themselves.

Unfortunately, after telegraphing more meaningful conflicts, this book distracts the main characters with side quests rather than action that advances the main plot line. In particular, Rand makes several mistakes that are unnecessary and don't seem to make much sense in the context of the story, other than to drag things out. The one positive note, however, is that this book dives deeper into the Forsaken and their different motivations in a way that sets up later books to be more satisfying than this one.

The best so far in the series. Jordan's narrative breaks the mold in developing three compelling plots that each could have stood on their own in lesser novels. Even further, Jordan weaves in compelling Easter eggs from previous novels and resolves the plots without the formulaic ending employed in the previous novels.

Great voice acting talent with a compelling set of stories to chew through. Really more of a collection of short stories that revolve around a central character than a linear narrative, but very rarely loses pace or interest.

I was a little put off by the initial pacing of this novel compared to the blistering pace of the Great Hunt. However, when things get going, the wait is worth it and the characters are brought into a greater balance in terms of the draw of their independent story lines.

Fans of Tolkien will love this epic fantasy. Made with some similar elements (a powerful evil returning, a heroic journey to deny that evil a source of power) Jordan improves on LOTR by focusing more on character development than poetry and languages. The pacing is brisk, and there are interesting threats that keep things moving all the way to the climactic finish. Fans of voice acting will not be disappointed. Each character is given a distinct and consistent voice, no small task for a novel with this many characters.

Wonderful adaptation of one of my favorite stories. Brian Jacques does his story justice as narrator supported by a strong voice cast. The only drawback is Cluny the Scourge. He comes off more screaming bully than sinister warlord in this rendition, but it is the only drawback. Highly recommended for young readers looking for a bridge between children's books and YA fare.

This audiobook was fascinating in its methodical examination of common mind-control techniques employed by the Trump campaign and administration. It is at its best when it uses concrete examples of cult behavior and compares them to Trump supporters. This book is particularly useful for people with loved ones who have been indoctrinated into support for Trump, or any other cult, as one chapter is dedicated to the counter-intuitive methods for deprogramming cult belief systems. A warning: Mr. Hassen's voice is very monotone. If you require lively narration, you will be disappointed.

While no one can say that the CISA is an easily accessible exam in terms of the breadth of content expected to be covered, the author/narrator does an admirable job of staying true to the majority of the review guide. As an auditory learner, I found it easier to listen to the CISA review manual as paraphrased in this volume, than it was to read and annotate it myself. The biggest challenge is when the author opines on the current state of the art in infosec or does not follow the order of the review manual, despite covering the vast majority of the content closely. These opinions I found, may diverge from preferred answers in "priority" type questions offered on the exam, and may distract from the correct answer. When the author covers material in a different order than the review manual, it generally took a while to find the section he was discussing to follow along. Other than those issues, it is the best bet for people who learn by listening and who would like to cover a great deal of material in a short period of time.
