Historia
Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true.

Review of It Ends with Us
Revisado: 01-28-25
While It Ends with Us aims to depict the complexities of domestic abuse, its execution feels more like a sanitized, cookie-cutter version of a survivor’s journey rather than an authentic, layered exploration of abuse dynamics.
Abuse is unacceptable regardless of privilege, background, or socioeconomic status. No one should experience physical, emotional, or sexual violence, and leaving an abusive relationship is never easy. However, while the book portrays Lily as an underdog, her journey is noticeably easier than the reality many survivors face. She has:
Financial independence through a thriving business.
A strong support system, including her mother and best friend.
An idealized former partner in Atlas, who does not perpetuate any form of secondary trauma.
These privileges allow her to leave her abuser far more easily than most real-life survivors, making her journey feel oversimplified and unrealistic.
The story relies on three key incidents to establish Lily as a victim, but the exploration of psychological, emotional, and systemic abuse feels surface-level rather than deeply examined.
The novel does imply cognitive dissonance and emotional conflict, as Lily experiences moments of fear, confusion, and hesitation. However, these aspects are not emphasized enough to fully capture how abuse erodes a person’s sense of self and reality. While there’s tension, the novel does not always dive into power imbalances, gaslighting, or the long-term effects of psychological trauma.
The book also does not fully explore the legal, financial, or familial barriers that often prevent victims from escaping abuse or the systemic difficulties many survivors—particularly those without financial or social resources—face in breaking free.
Lily’s childhood, growing up in an abusive household, was a more compelling aspect of her story than her adult relationship with Ryle.
The book attempts to depict a range of abuse, showcasing different forms through Ryle and Lily’s father as perpetrators, and Lily and her mother as victims.
I do applaud the effort, and nothing excuses Ryle’s abusive actions whatsoever.
The novel subtly presents an unspoken triangulation between Lily, Ryle, and Atlas. While Lily is not actively seeking or engaging in an affair, certain aspects of her interactions with Atlas—such as avoiding explanations about why she hesitated to return to the restaurant, keeping a sentimental gift from him, or Ryle discovering Atlas’s note in her phone—could be perceived as emotional entanglement.
It's important to understand how keeping a gift from an ex, omitting them from certain discussions, or maintaining sentimental attachments can be perceived as inappropriate within a marital or committed relationship. Some readers might not see it as a big deal because they don’t consider the deeper implications of emotional attachment and boundaries.
If one partner keeps physical reminders of an old romance, it can be seen as not fully letting go of that past bond. It’s not necessarily about possession or control—it’s about fostering mutual respect and trust within the current relationship.
This in no way condones abuse of any kind, of course!
Final Verdict
While the book succeeds in creating an emotional connection with readers, it falls short in accurately representing the depth of an abuse survivor’s struggles, particularly those who lack privilege. It is a commercialized, digestible version of a difficult topic, which may resonate with casual readers or those who see themselves in Lily’s character while still critiquing the lack of diversity in survivor narratives.
All victim narratives of abuse are valid, and abuse does not have to be extreme or frequent to be real. The abusive incidents in the book are serious and important, but the overall portrayal still felt oversimplified and surface-level, making it less immersive and realistic for those who have experienced or studied domestic violence in depth.
This book isn’t bad, but much like its movie counterpart, it simply didn’t work for me—not something I felt was a must-read. Lily is in her early 20s, and I imagine a younger reader or someone who directly relates to her experience might appreciate it more. While I recognized her struggles and felt sympathy for her at times, I found it difficult to fully engage with her character. This may be due to how her story was framed, her privilege, or the way the book simplified key aspects of her journey as an adult in an abusive relationship.
What truly redeemed the book was getting to know Lily in her formative years through her Ellen entries.
While I wanted to like both the book and the movie, they ultimately fell short for me. I appreciate stories that shed light on abuse, but this one felt more like a surface-level attempt—much like Enough starring Jennifer Lopez. While the novel’s intention is commendable, its execution lacks the depth needed to fully capture the complexity of abuse.

I took notes. she didn't present new concepts but the way it's explained really resonates in a simple and approachable manner to educate and reflect on own experiences. sometimes the reading wasn't as smooth as id appreciate but I'm glad the author read her own book it's less impersonal and endears her to the reader as a real person
