Historia
The Namesake follows the Ganguli family through its journey from Calcutta to Cambridge to the Boston suburbs. When their son is born, the task of naming him betrays the vexed results of bringing old ways to the new world. Named for a Russian writer by his Indian parents in memory of a catastrophe years before, Gogol Ganguli knows only that he suffers the burden of his heritage as well as his odd, antic name.

Loathe the background music
Revisado: 04-07-25
Such a great story, and a wonderful narrator, but the last 2 minutes, clearly meant for quiet absorption, are ruined by the sudden rise of, f-ing sappy music. Who makes these choices!? The words of the author and the voice of the narrator are enough. And the stupid music stole a reflective moment a listener/reader deserves at the end of a book. Soo mad.

Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

grating character voices!
Revisado: 10-31-22
Beware of ch 4. I had to quit because the narrator's voice of an old man was so grating, and the scene was 10 mins long. it was excruciating! He needn't have done this...the author had written enough for us to understand the annoyingness of the voice. Murikami is a masterful author NOT a script writer. The narrator should have toned it down.

Historia
Women have been making strides towards equality for decades, or so we’re often told. They’ve been increasingly entering male-dominated areas of the workforce and consistently surpassing their male peers in grades, university attendance, and degrees. They’ve recently stormed the political arena with a vengeance. But despite all of this, the payoff is—quite literally—not there: the gender pay gap has held steady at about 20% since 2000. And the number of female CEOs for Fortune 500 companies has actually been declining.

Like a big sister explaining
Revisado: 01-25-22
Stacey is your big sister giving you the reality check you can't see on your own. It's hard to hear, but truth now from one who's been there is better than dismay and lack of preparation later. And if you don't like how it feels, she's got the research to back up her report and her suggestions. And, you'll appreciate Machiavelli too!

Historia
The funeral of Charles Henry Topping on Manhattan’s Upper East Side would have been a minor affair (his two-hundred-word obit in The New York Times notwithstanding) but for the presence of one particular mourner: the notoriously reclusive author A. N. Dyer, whose novel Ampersand stands as a classic of American teenage angst. But as Andrew Newbold Dyer delivers the eulogy for his oldest friend, he suffers a breakdown over the life he’s led and the people he’s hurt and the novel that will forever endure as his legacy.

Good prose, decent story
Revisado: 11-25-21
Narrator seemed southern in cadence and that lilt was a distraction at first for a novel set in NYC. No character was likeable in this novel (except for the mothers, curiously)...but what the author does well is show one or two shiny moments of each man's reachable humanness. I liked that, and we deserve that as readers.

Historia
In this Audible Exclusive production, Academy Award® nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) narrates one of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Sense and Sensibility. In this timeless tale of misguided romance and heartbreak, two teenage heroines must overcome the pitfalls of Georgian England’s high society in order to achieve the love and happiness they seek. The admiration that Pike has for Austen’s work is shown clearly through this passionate delivery of Austen’s first published novel.

Like it's a delightful surprise
Revisado: 01-15-21
I enjoyed Pike's narration of Pride and Prejudice but thought it was a one-off, so it was a delight to find her narration outs S&S, too. I've come to appreciate R. Pike the actor much more. In her narration is displayed a greater variety of her acting talent than she's been allowed on screen. What's best is she has complete awareness of Austen's stinging humor and knows how to express it just so.

Historia
Austen Years is a deeply felt and sensitive examination of a writer’s relationship to reading, and to her own family, winding together memoir, criticism, and biographical and historical material about Austen herself. And like the sequence of Austen’s novels, the scope of Austen Years widens successively, with each chapter following one of Austen's novels. We begin with Cohen in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she raises her small children and contemplates her father’s last letter.

Narrator's voice takes some settling into
Revisado: 01-02-21
The narrator's voice was so different than the author's voice you will hear at the end. It is not a scholarly voice but one weighted by more emotion than the author exposed in her text. In one way, that's a good thing - the narrator gave us a rhythm we less scholarly plebs could keep to, but it will at first annoy any scholarly sense you may have.

You're not the only one!
Revisado: 04-20-17
What did you love best about Driven to Distraction?
It validates and defines a 'disorder' many of us thought was an innate flaw. It's a relief to "put a name to it" as so many of his clients say. It's so good to know that there are experts out there who know and study what you are going through, and that there are promising solutions and help.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Driven to Distraction?
The stories will leave you involuntarily nodding your head at the symptoms and chuckling (sometimes sadly) about the missed cues. The stories and anecdotes, however edited they may be, make each of us who struggles with ADD feel so much less alone.
Have you listened to any of John McDonough’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Nope, but I enjoyed his friendly and wise-sounding voice.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No way.
