Wonderful Classic Book
Revisado: 08-23-23
It’s long, but worth the time. Dickens has a variety of interesting and eccentric characters. It’s well written and a good escape from daily life.
The narrator is amazing in his ability to bring life to each character with consistent and unique voices. Well done!

Historia
In the 1860s, Napoleon III, intent on curbing the rise of American imperialism, persuaded a young Austrian archduke and a Belgian princess to leave Europe and become the emperor and empress of Mexico. They and their entourage arrived in a Mexico ruled by terror, where revolutionary fervor was barely suppressed by French troops. When the United States, now clear of its own Civil War, aided the rebels in pushing back Maximilian’s imperial soldiers, the French army withdrew, abandoning the young couple. The regime fell apart.

Not a Balanced History
Revisado: 07-16-22
Monarchies and empires are miserable to live under unless one is wealthy, which is why my ancestors sacrificed everything to get to the United States, including millions of Mexicans. We want the freedom this imperfect country offers. If you agree with this, you will not like this book. The author favors monarchs and dictators over the freedoms the USA has to offer. In the epilogue, he states that the problems that Mexico, and most of the world have, are due to the imperialism of the United States. Rubbish! I’m returning this book and do not recommend it.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Historia
Philip II is not only the most famous king in Spanish history, but one of the most famous monarchs in English history: the man who married Mary Tudor and later launched the Spanish Armada against her sister Elizabeth I. This compelling biography of the most powerful European monarch of his day begins with his conception (1526) and ends with his ascent to Paradise (1603), two occurrences surprisingly well documented by contemporaries. Eminent historian Geoffrey Parker draws on four decades of research on Philip as well as a recent, extraordinary archival discovery - a trove of 3,000 documents in vaults in New York City....

Fascinating Man and Era
Revisado: 11-10-20
I enjoyed the very thorough description of Philip II. The author covers not only historical details, but delves into who the man was and why he was that way. The 1500s were a time of great change when the Americas and the Philippines were colonized. My only complaint is minor, and that is the narrator pronounces words with the letter Z in them with a TH sound. This is probably because it’s the way they are pronounced in Spanish, but this is an English translation. Words like Cádiz sound like Cardiff, and Perez sound like Pereth. I had to stop a few times to figure out what the narrator was saying. I also wish the monetary unit had been pounds, euros, or even dollars, instead of ducats. I wasn’t able to follow the value of expenditures. Other than that, it is a great book.

Historia
Many are familiar with the story of the much-married King Henry VIII of England and the celebrated reign of his daughter, Elizabeth I. But it is often forgotten that the life of the first Tudor queen, Elizabeth of York, Henry's mother and Elizabeth's grandmother, spanned one of England' s most dramatic and perilous periods. Now New York Times best-selling author and acclaimed historian Alison Weir presents the first modern biography of this extraordinary woman.

Excellent Book for History Lovers
Revisado: 10-05-20
I enjoyed this book. The author takes you back in time to the fascinating life of Elizabeth of York, the mother of Henry viii. What a life! I came away with a greater understanding of life in this era. The narrator has a great voice. Some reviews criticize her voice when she is quoting foreign authors. I didn’t think it was that bad. Don’t keep from listening to this book based on those reviews.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Interesting Collection of Stories
Revisado: 06-25-20
I'm glad I read the book. The stories are anecdotal with the exception of the policing issues for which he goes into great depth, backed up by research, to explain the anger and frustration black citizens have with the police. I wish he had posed a solution for this, as the absence of police doesn't reduce crime. But it is helpful to see the issue from the point of blacks who feel harassed and police who want to curb crime. Perhaps there will be better dialog in the future and solutions from all parties involved.
The spy stories are interesting and the initial impressions of Hitler disturbing. Gladwell does an excellent job in explaining issues involved with sexual predators including legal issues surrounding unwanted sexual encounters involving high levels of alcohol consumption.
I wish Gladwell had touched on the problems in the USA between liberals and conservatives understanding one another and the shutting down of meaningful conversation. The Covington Catholic school boy, Nicholas Sandmann, who was vilified by the media would have been an interesting story of bigotry.

Grammar! For many of us, the word triggers memories of finger-wagging schoolteachers, and of wrestling with the ambiguous and complicated rules of using formal language. But what is grammar? In fact, it's the integral basis of how we speak and write. As such, a refined awareness of grammar opens a world of possibilities for both your pleasure in the English language and your skill in using it, in both speech and the written word.

Not for Improving Grammar Usage

I bought this hoping to learn how to improve my grammar as I have never had formal teaching. I was so disappointed to hear lecture after lecture about how everything is ok. Anything we think is poor grammar is supported. Not helpful at all.
