Won’t finish. This is a romance masquerading as a mystery. There are many details I don’t want to hear.

Following the death of her husband, Lady Darby has taken refuge at her sister's estate, finding solace in her passion for painting. But when one of the house guests is murdered, her brother-in-law asks her to aid the insufferable Sebastian Gage - a fellow guest with some experience as an inquiry agent. Very predictable
Revisado: 08-14-24
Sadly, I had the culprit figured out about halfway through the book. It was aggravating waiting for the characters to figure it out. Many actions just seemed so stupid in my opinion. Firstly, why in the world wait till the very last possible second to actually look through the victim’s room?? Why search a room with the person sitting right there when you had no reason to?? Why was they the only one you did this to? I could go on and on but this was my first and probably last book by Anna Lee Huber. The romance was cringeworthy to me. At times so sexual it just took me out of the story. It’s like all they are there for is sex!

Historia
A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want - money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman's past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn't know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist - an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison.

Wouldn’t listen again. I’m just annoyed now.
Revisado: 01-20-24
Potential Spoilers Ahead* You’ve been warned.
This book feels dated and cliched. I was so shocked it was written in 2018 and not 2008. Grace feels and acts like she’s in her 50s most of the time. At one point she even jokes about using disposable diapers.
One minor but very annoying moment was when Roman called Samuel “Sammy” for short and she went karen on him and said “hIs nAMe is SAMuEL” but later in the book she and others call Samuel “rapscal” which apparently is now ok.
I’m also frustrated by the way things resolved. They both share very sad and traumatic childhoods. A few months/years of being Christian isn’t going to magically fix 30 something years of trauma and toxic behavior due to that trauma.
I’m also reminded of the aunt who had an overnight change and was suddenly the aunt Grace always wanted and needed. Life doesn’t work that way. Healing from trauma is a lifetime of being healed one layer at a time.
All in all, this couple just doesn’t seem to mesh well. Grace is very uptight and high strung and Roman aka Billy Ray is a lot more laid back and easy going. She acts 55 and he acts 25. I see a lot of fights in their future instead of the hunky dory all life is perfect since we did “intense 3 months of marriage counseling”. Annnnd to compound it all, they have another child right after they get married. So you have the stress of already having a child when first getting married then you add another on top and you have trauma and a new move etc etc it’s just laughably a train wreck.
I forgot to add but I’m also rolling my eyes we never get a resolution on Samuel. It’s alluded to who the father is but never resolved,
Ok, there’s my highly annoyed review. Now “Let’s blast some walls for Jesus” said the cringiest Christian ever.

I accidentally read the 2nd in this series before this one. I don’t even know where to begin. The storyline was quite boring, sorry. Also, she never finds out about who fathered Grady even though it’s revealed at the end. I would’ve enjoyed a confrontation between her and Grady’s father! The Robert Hoffman portrayed in the 2nd book is different from the 1st. Almost like 2 different people! And lastly, she falls in love with a man who doesn’t see slaves like she does. Why would she want to be with someone who believes totally opposite to her? Doesn’t make any sense!! The love story just wasn’t convincing. He needed a better turnaround than reading her life story and realizing he loved her. Just so dumb…

BORING!
Revisado: 03-26-23
Sorry I enjoy a lot of Christian mysteries but this one was SO full of random characters I didn't care about TALKING so much I started to hate listening. At about 2 hours left I finally had to quit it. It was 95% talking about 5% action. Side tangent: but can the author think up any name other than Karen? We had a person named Karen living in Karen, Karen county and Karen lake!! Are you kidding me????

Very cringy book about spiritual warfare that honestly sounds like something a child made up… if you want something like this, I highly recommend Frank Peretti’s Darkness series.

Had to quit listening..
Revisado: 02-01-23
Very hard to get into a story when is the narrator sounds so old for a character that is supposed to be in college… I stopped listening after the horrible event. Side note, I have listened to and read many Francine Rivers novels and I have yet to find one where she doesn’t mention seeing someone’s pulse in their throat! It’s super weird. I have never noticed that about someone and doubt many do.

Honestly, I feel bad writing this
Revisado: 02-23-22
But I guess I’m just sick and tired of the “I’m a strong independent woman who doesn’t need any man but will be stupid and put myself in dangerous situations to prove I’m not like other girls” main character. I was done with the story from the beginning when I realized that’s where it was going. I never found her likable, nor her beau. I abandoned the story. I could only take so much cringing…
