Historia
Behold the orphan. Born into a world that is not a world. A digital being grown from a mind seed, a genderless cybernetic citizen in a vast network of probes, satellites, and servers knitting the Solar System into one scape, from the outer planets to the fiery surface of the Sun. Since the Introdus in the 21st century, humanity has reconfigured itself drastically. Most chose immortality, joining the polises to become conscious software.

Historia
In What We Owe The Future, philosopher William MacAskill argues for longtermism, that idea that positively influencing the distant future is a key moral priority of our time. It’s not enough to reverse climate change or avert the next pandemic. We must ensure that civilization would rebound if it collapsed, counter the end of moral progress, and prepare for a planet where the smartest beings are digital, not human. If we set humanity’s course right, our grandchildren’s grandchildren will thrive, knowing we did everything to give them a world of justice, hope, and beauty.

intriguing author, important questions, long winded answers
Revisado: 04-03-25
some incredibly thought-provoking questions in vignettes surrounded by for examples.
overall a poorly constructed book. this would have made an incredible pamphlet with powerful nuggets and bullet points.
sadly to get those nuggets you've got to listen to hours upon hours of fluff mixed in. The author is tackling a very important problem. I really enjoyed this author on several podcasts see wrestles with this topic. although I disagree very strongly with a few of his thought exercises, overall I'm saddened to have to give such a negative review. I would skip the book and find some of the long form podcasts or YouTube videos that he is on.
you'll get much of the same content and save yourself the waste of a credit.

It tries... but falls way short
Revisado: 07-06-24
written in 1989, this book is a product of its era thinking the Russian threat would live on forever. although there are some very realistic descriptions of what life on a space station and strong guesses of what life on a spinning space station would be like the story is just so darn boring it's not worth a read.

Where Is the Book?
Revisado: 04-05-24
This document provides a compelling exploration of how AI may progress in our solar system. Here we see an arms race of more and more computing resources and how humans get left behind in the singularity.
Although I'm absolutely intrigued about this technological possibility, the book itself provides less of a story and more of a potential roadmap for humanity...wrapped around a weak fictional narrative.
So although I scored this book very poorly, if you're interested in exploring that computational potential future, then I recommend the book heartily. but if you were looking for well-written sci-fi fiction, look elsewhere.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

Revisado: 01-25-24
this book came highly recommended as one of the pillars of science fiction. maybe if I read more of the books in the series I would get excited about it unsure. but I hated this book boring without memorable characters no exciting themes. no redemption at the end the arc is completely worthless.

A Fire Upon the Deep is the big, breakout book that fulfills the promise of Vinge's career to date: a gripping tale of galactic war told on a cosmic scale. Thousands of years hence, many races inhabit a universe where a mind's potential is determined by its location in space, from superintelligent entities in the Transcend, to the limited minds of the Unthinking Depths, where only simple creatures and technology can function.
