There are a lot of bad litrpg books with positive ratings that leave me confused as to how they are rated so well, but this series isn't one of those. This book is another fun book in the series, definitely worth reading.

A moving tale of empathy, regret and the ups and downs that are life. Will helps to remove the sunglasses of celebrity from your eyes and to see him for the pleasant and compassionate gamer nerd that he actually is. I cannot imagine what it is to be a teenager receiving death threats over a character you play on a TV program, but Will helped bring me closer. i feel genuine sadness for the struggle that he and many others like him endure.

Not sure if Greaney lost a bet or what

The overall story writing and narration are incredible as usual, Mark Greaney is a good writer. In fact, I think the dialog writing in this book is some of his best yet. That said, there was at least one aspect of the book that kind of sucked. I'm not sure if he lost a bet with a friend, or simply decided to try changing his writing style, but he wrote a massive portion of this book in the first person from Gentry's view. It's jarring, obnoxious and frankly ...stupid. If the whole book was being told from his point of view as a retelling of events, that might have worked, but as it was, it simply grated on my nerves. I bet there were more "I"'s and "We"'s in this book than a number of his past books put together. I'm not sure why his book editor thought this approach worked, because it's incredibly exasperating when the writing constantly switches between first person and third person.

The only other annoyance was that some of the characters were bad stereotypes and I didn't find their actions all that believable at many points (though this was minor compared to the stupid first person writing obsession). I'm pretty sure if you encountered a room with 20 or so sex trafficking victims and offered them a chance to escape, at least one would jump at the chance, regardless of threats made to them from their captors. That was just one moment among many where all I could think was "seriously??". Those moments just seemed badly contrived to push the story in a specific direction.

I would have given the book 5 stars if not for these problems, because the story is pretty good, Jay Snider is flawless and (as I said earlier) the dialog is awesome.

Hacking is wizardry

The overall writing is passable, but the story is just bad. It is an interesting idea, but the execution is lacking. Either the author doesn't know anything about technology or is intentionally perpetuating the stupidest Hollywood hacker stereotypes and then some. He'd have you believe hackers can just magically slice into a computer system and accidentally pull up security camera feeds. Beyond that they also have connections with folks who are experts and breaking into people's homes and wiring it for surveillance. What a bunch of utter crap. Overlooking this rather black ops fantasy idea of hackers, many of the characters just lack depth. The constant portrayal of the main character as this paladin-esque "Protect and Serve is everything!" hero gets old SUPER fast. Then of course there is this issue of the super secret government organization that doesn't seem to be very secret at all. I'm guessing this book was one of Glynn's first works. Perhaps the book gets better, but I won't be finding out, because what I've read so far is just too damn tedious to continue on.

Too much "tech is magic" thinking for me

I tried to finish this book, but the lazy premise killed it for me. It's incredibly silly, even for a litrpg premise, which I'll generally cut a lot of slack. As little as the operators of the game understand their own tech, it might was well be magic. On top of which, the way the game suddenly changes all the details of how it functions may as well also be magic. The author would have been better off not trying to explain it.

Maybe if I were still 12

I powered through a good portion of the book, but I just couldn't finish. Typically I finish books regardless, but I just couldn't. The story has plot holes large enough to sail the Titanic through. That coupled with supposedly "smart" characters who behave rather stupidly and the rampant harem action (which in all fairness there was plenty of warning about) was just too much. The author apparently has the characters make at least one blatantly stupid choice simply so he can use it as a future plot device, which frankly is just lazy writing. The narrator was mediocre. I'm not sure if he was directed to overact some stuff or if it was just his choice, but it was a bad choice either way. I can imagine this appealing to nerdy 12 year old hormonal boys who aren't focused on details, but otherwise I'd probably steer clear.

While the narrator is not monotone, he's not too far off. I have to say ....this isn't great....not even good. The reading coupled with the teenage boy equivalent of a bodice ripper mixed with ridiculous wish fulfillment makes this painful to listen to. I really tried to give it a chance, but I just couldn't finish. The overall concept was interesting, but the execution was extremely lacking in all areas.

For a character who is supposed to be incredibly smart and methodical, he's incredibly stupid. The main character misses things that anyone with half a brain would have caught. The overall story is somewhat interesting, but the author is intent on embracing silly cliches (such as marching out MS13 as the biggest scariest boogieman on the planet). If you want a serious well written thriller, this is not the book for you.

If you are looking for any kind of more mature superhero story, this isn't it. I honestly couldn't finish it. From what I can tell the target demographic is young hormonal boys that are not popular in school. I couldn't make it more than an hour in before I decided to return this book. The main character's power set has to be one of the most idiotic things I've encountered. I'm clearly not the audience for this book. If you are that audience, then you might find it sufficiently enjoyable.

First off, Wil Wheaton does a fantastic job. His narration is what provoked me to give this book a listen. Unfortunately, great narration cannot make boring material that much better. This book seems like more like YA fiction than anything. It likely resonates with teens much more, but as I'm in my 40's, me not so much. The premise is somewhat interesting, but I can't say much more positive about the story than that.
