I'm sure it's a good story. I very much enjoyed the Jack Dempsy books. But I have zero interest in religious themed books.

I couldn't finish it.
Revisado: 07-06-24
The first book was good enough to prompt me to buy the second book, but half-way through it started to become unbelievable. And 2/3 of the way through the dialog was so bad I couldn't finish it. It was just silly at that point. The things things the characters were doing and saying by the end of the book we on par with a really bad B movie.
Jay Snyder as always did an excellent job with the narration.

Great performance, underwhelming story.
Revisado: 05-11-23
Cast and performance: Excellent. The cast is what got me to the end, but these are professional film and TV actors that have been in some great shows. Wendell Pierce and Marcia Gay Harden carried it. Lorena Diaz was good too.
Story: Not so much. I like this genre and listen to books like this all the time, but this one didn't do much for me.
Direction and production: Weak at best. I say this because the audio in the first episode was terrible and confusing. In later episodes it was just confusing. There were too many sounds that were ambiguous. I've listened to some fantastic Audible "plays" like this but none of them had all of the odd sounds that couldn't be identified. The big reveal at the end wasn't much of a reveal either since it wasn't at all clear what happened to several of the characters. Like the girl who didn't have a voice and then suddenly does at the end. Where did that come from?

Surprisingly poor sound design and mixing.
Revisado: 05-09-23
I'm very surprised with such a great cast that this was so poorly produced. I've only listened to the first episode but the sound is so bad it's very difficult to understand what is happening. I don't think it was written with this format in mind because the story in this episode is confusing. I assume this is because it's difficult to tell the characters apart, again from the poor sound design. It's also just difficult to tell what's happening. Needs more dialog, less weird noises that don't make sense.
I hope it gets better. I gave the performance high marks because the actors are great and it's not their fault that whomever put this together was asleep at the wheel. I will try again with episode two because I like the cast and the story has my interest. Hopefully it becomes more clear.

On Zero Day of the first and last cyberwar in human history, the internet went dark, transport and power grids collapsed and cities began to starve, showing just how vulnerable the world could be to a targeted campaign of online sabotage. This final installment of this prescient epic of civilisation collapse finds the small ragtag band of survivors come together to face a new, but eerily familiar threat - the rise of a fascist militia among the ruins of a failing country.

The entire series as a suspenseful thriller with superb writing. I loved the story and the narration was spectacular. I’ve got over 225 books in my audible library and I’d put this book in my top five.

Historia
Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

I couldn't finish it
Revisado: 05-12-22
After paying for a book I don't like, I typically finish it just so I don't feel like I wasted time and money. I couldn't finish this book. It's just a bad Hallmark movie. I don't like bashing creative works, so I typically don't leave negative reviews, but this was bad enough to drive me to do it. First, it's very very slow. It has lots of detail about the characters that you won't care about because you won't end up caring about the characters. It tries very hard to paint a Norman Rockwell painting but falls flat. The narration was a bit too sappy as well. Talented narrator, but he just poured so much syrup all over this thing I couldn't take it. I lasted about 7 hours, more than halfway through the book, and decided that I'd rather clean that pesky soap scum off of my shower doors instead of listening to this book. The forward by Newt Gingrich should have tipped me off. He's not exactly a literary genius.
In summary: slow, boring, characters are not that likable (they're boring too), and weak narration. Also, "aren't we Americans", "this is America" and "we are Americans" are statements that are repeated dozens and dozens of times. I lost count I heard the phrase so many times.

Enjoyable page-turner
Revisado: 02-03-22
I'm a native Texan and an Austinite so that made this book a bit more fun for me than it might for most people, but it's still a fun story and I'll be buying the next book in the series. I've got nearly 200 Audible titles in my library, so I listen to quite a few books. There are many that I either can't get through or just don't want to try, but that wasn't the case with this book. It was suspenseful enough and detailed enough to hold my attention for the entire story.

Historia
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

Revisado: 04-22-21
I'm not usually into period pieces, but this one kept me guessing. I had a great time listening to it. I find David Baldacci a little hit or miss, but this one was definitely a hit. And I've never heard Ballerini read something that I didn't like.
Highly recommended.

Another great Koontz book - great narration
Revisado: 04-19-21
I don't like fantasy so every time I start a Koontz book I think I'm not going to be able to finish, and then he pulls me in. This is another fantastical and fantastic story of his. Edorado Ballerini is, as always, incredibly talented. I landed on this book because I search for books he has narrated. It was co-narrated by Imani Parks. A lot of reviewers have given negative feedback about her but I think she did a good job. Yes, it was stilted and uneven at times, but that's more the editor's fault than hers I think. I think she made up for her mistakes by giving the character a young voice and I think she did a very nice job of it. She sounded like Amity to me. Since the tone of her voice fit the character so well I was able to forgive the few mistakes she made. I didn't mind her narration at all and in fact I liked it. And trust me, I'm a tough judge of narration.
I recommend this book to any Koontz fan, and if you're not a fan you should read it anyway. It won't disappoint.

A nice story. Boring, but nice.
Revisado: 12-21-20
Just a nice 20 hour long story. 20 hours of nice. No drama, no suspense, no villain, no hero, just nice. Scott Brick’s performance was the only reason I could listen to the whole thing. After 15 hours of nothing happening, I finally realized nothing was going to happen. I think this story could have been told in an hour.
