This is the book for our times. I would encourage everyone to read it and appreciate the wisdom and guidance it shares. The biggest threat to democracy is not a tyrannical leader, it is ignorance.

I have followed the work of Dr. Hotez since the beginning of the pandemic, and continue to be grateful for his brilliance as well as his calmness in the face of insanity. Anyone who values science and the lifesaving, life-enhancing impact it has had upon our world would appreciate the wisdom and guidance this book offers. For anyone who doesn’t value or believe in science…well, perhaps Dr. Hotez is a good role model when it comes to finding ways to engage with those difficult voices. Screaming at each other has certainly never been effective.

What we learned as children - “stop, look, listen” - may still be the wisest advice we received. David Brooks shares wisdom for the ages, inspiring his listeners to encounter others at a deeper level. At a time when we are dangerously divided, knowing others - truly knowing them in a deep way - holds the greatest potential for healing and collaboration. This is a book I am recommending both to friends and psychotherapy clients.

I’ve always appreciated Borowitz’s humor, but this book takes his talent to new heights. With his usual cleverness, Borowitz also educates the reader about a pattern that is far more long-standing and insidious than we may have realized. What is critically important is that he ends the book with suggestions about how we can each be agents of change.

John Gottman and his colleagues are brilliant researchers who have offered much guidance about relationships - from marriage to parenting. This is a solid, practical resource that I will definitely recommend to my psychotherapy clients.

As a clergy person now working in mental health, I read/listen to very few books on theology, lacking the time to stay current in both disciplines. I am so glad I took the time to listen to this! It is a refreshing look at biblical scholarship that challenges what Christianity has become in some places: co-opted by white nationalism, an exercise in exclusion. This book presents a very different vision that allows enough space for us to all dwell in the humility of knowing that, while God’s kingdom is expansive enough for all, we understand only a fraction of the teachings we follow. It is a call to acceptance and inclusivity. And the author’s choice to read it himself was perfect! It is like listening to a very engaging sermon.

I am a therapist who has followed Dr. Barkley’s work for years and found it helpful in my practice. This is no exception. It is a helpful guide that I will recommend to clients. I would resonate with others who said the narration was disruptive. The cadence and style of the narrator was oddly jarring, and it took some time to block out the irritation I felt. Perhaps consider reading this, not listening to it.

This may be a bit dense to Wade through if you are a layperson, but it is worth it because it offers an abundance of helpful information and insight. As a provider, I appreciate such a thorough overview of recent research and thinking.

This is clearly intended for practitioners (I was actually surprised that readers would expect otherwise). As such, it is an excellent reminder of the many ways in which people experience trauma - from individual to cultural - and how mental health professionals and others who teach mindfulness can be aware of its limitations in certain situations.

This book is full of creative ideas that can also encourage parents to come up with ideas of their own. I would recommend reading it, however, not listening to it. It is comprised of an assortment of narrators assuming odd and unconvincing accents in an attempt to portray the person who submitted each idea. I found that distracting.
