Historia
Although previously undervalued for their strategic impact because they represented only a small percentage of total forces, the Union and Confederate navies were crucial to the outcome of the Civil War. In War on the Waters, James M. McPherson has crafted an enlightening, at times harrowing, and ultimately thrilling account of the war’s naval campaigns and their military leaders. McPherson recounts how the Union navy’s blockade of the Confederate coast, leaky as a sieve in the war’s early months, became increasingly effective as it choked off vital imports and exports.

Excellent guide to the naval conflict of the war. McPhearson's books are starting to show their age but they are nonetheless still so easy to digest while still being stuffed with information.

In all the annals of military history, no commander-in-chief has ever been blessed with so many talented generals as Napoleon. These magnificent 26 Marshals of France under his command gave Napoleon the scope and ability to carry out his brilliant campaigns.

This book is too old to hold any Francophobia against the author. It is bias and woefully outdated, but is still interesting.

Historia
The Boy Generals: George Custer, Wesley Merritt, and the Cavalry of the Army of the Potomac is the first installment in a remarkable trilogy to examine the strategy, tactics, and relationships of the leading Union army’s mounted arm and their influence on the course of the Civil War in the Eastern Theater. George Armstrong Custer’s career has attracted its fair share of coverage, but most Custer-related studies focus on his decision-making and actions to the exclusion of other important factors, including his relationships with his fellow officers.

Garbage
Revisado: 04-17-24
Not all books on the Civil War are worth reading. This is unfortunately one of those books. The author is bland and cliché, nothing new or intriguing for a fan of Civil War cavalry. In fact, this book feels like it was written in the 1920s, not the 2020s. Author is unknowingly nationalistic and religious in his assessments. I guess the opening chapter discussing his families "escape" to America from Cuba and his childhood fascination with Custer should have been bigger red flags.
Simply put, this book is poor history, not up to the standards of the 21st century. I might as well have wasted my time and money reading Shelby Foote than listen to inaccurate idol worship. I honestly have no idea how this book was published the author is that incompetent.

Historia
Loyal Americans marched off to war in 1861 not to conquer the South but to liberate it. So argues Elizabeth R. Varon in Armies of Deliverance, a sweeping narrative of the Civil War and a bold new interpretation of Union and Confederate war aims. Northerners imagined the war as a crusade to deliver the Southern masses from slaveholder domination and to bring democracy, prosperity, and education to the region. As the war escalated, Lincoln and his allies built the case that emancipation would secure military victory and benefit the North and South alike.

A clear, comprehensive narrative unlike any other

Historians of the Civil War often get sidetracked by martial romanticization. Not Varon. She blends social, political, and military history into one, well researched book that leaves no stone of the war unturned.

Historia
In a lifetime shaped by politics, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proved himself a master manipulator of Congress, the press, and the public. But when war in Europe and Asia threatened America's shores, FDR found himself in a world turned upside down, where his friends became his foes, his enemies his allies. To help wage democracy's first "total war", he turned to one of history's most remarkable triumvirates.

Historia
General George C. Marshall, chief of staff of the US Army during World War II, faced the daunting task not only of overseeing two theaters of a global conflict but also of selecting the best generals to carry out American grand strategy. Marshall and His Generals is the first and only book to focus entirely on that selection process and the performances, both stellar and disappointing, that followed from it. Stephen Taaffe explores how and why Marshall selected the Army's commanders.
