Great character and story - looks like a great series
Revisado: 04-13-22
I really liked the detective Peter Diamond - as his name implies he is rough sharp and sparkly. Beautifully read and a good cosmopolitan story - I’m going to listen to the whole series

Historia
Long before he set foot on the islands, 'Big Cat Diary' and 'Springwatch' presenter, Simon King, fell in love with Shetland. This extraordinary northern wilderness is home to otters and vast seabird colonies, but it was a chance encounter with a killer whale that compelled him to spend a year getting to know the place of his boyhood dreams for a BBC series. With his wife and young daughter, Simon experienced Shetland through the changing seasons and discovered the wildlife and the warmth of community in these islands battered by the ocean.

Great story
Revisado: 06-17-16
Would you try another book from Vanessa Woods and/or Justine Eyre?
Happy to read or listen to any book written by Vanessa Woods. She is fabulous. I just wish Justine Eyre was told how to pronounce the "Bonobo" - its is really annoying she cant pronounce the word - and I cant help thinking it will not make Vanessa and Brian very happy
What did you like best about this story?
The truth and depth - I used to work in the Congo and she captured the harshness and difficult of living and working there.
Would you be willing to try another one of Justine Eyre’s performances?
I would be concerned about her pronunciation.
What else would you have wanted to know about Vanessa Woods’s life?
Anything she could tell us and she tells us most - she really is a great person

Historia
The familiar call of the common cuckoo, "cuck-oo", has been a harbinger of spring ever since our ancestors walked out of Africa many thousands of years ago. However, for naturalist and scientist Nick Davies, the call is an invitation to solve an enduring puzzle: How does the cuckoo get away with laying its eggs in the nests of other birds and tricking them into raising young cuckoos rather than their own offspring?

If you could sum up Cuckoo in three words, what would they be?
Fascinating revealing and surprising
What about David Thorpe’s performance did you like?
Beautiful illustrations by Thorpe -
Any additional comments?
This is a truly fabulous book that reveals the intricate co-evolution of the parasitic cuckoo and their hosts. Nick Davies has spent 30 years sitting patiently and watching the behavior of both cuckoos and reed warblers on Wicken Fen, a marsh nature reserve north of Cambridge, and then undertaken beautifully designed experiments to reveal the complex and fascinating biology of these and other species. The best defense by the host is to recognize when a cuckoo may try and lay her egg in their nest, then to recognize and reject the egg. Nick has made hundreds of artificial eggs to mimic the eggs of different bird species with different patterns on them that he then slips into the nests to observe when the host rejects and what the cuckoo can get away with. You start to realize the level of biology that is involved and appreciate that most birds eggs with their bright colors and complex squiggles and designed to stop parasitism rather than for camouflage. He asks perceptive questions and answers them with these neat field experiments (no birds were harmed) that reveal so much about the behavior of birds that everyone with a passing interest in birds or natural history will find this book a delight. This is without doubt one of the most enjoyable natural history books I have ever read - and I have several rooms full of natural history books.

Great story but reader annoying
Revisado: 11-16-14
What did you love best about Deception Point: A Novel?
Great story bringing in politics and science - Dan Brown always a safe bet.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator reads well and is good with his emphasis and voices. BUT he has this annoying habit of making noises with his mouth when not reading - Im surprised the recording company did not remove these. I ended up not listening to the story but waiting for him to swallow or make noises - very off putting.

Historia
In this groundbreaking work, evolutionary biologist Jared Diamond stunningly dismantles racially based theories of human history by revealing the environmental factors actually responsible for history's broadest patterns. It is a story that spans 13,000 years of human history, beginning when Stone Age hunter-gatherers constituted the entire human population. Guns, Germs, and Steel is a world history that really is a history of all the world's peoples, a unified narrative of human life.

Boring but intriguing
Revisado: 02-09-08
I have tried several times to read this book so it was time to listen to it on audible. I am afraid my original impressions were right, this is a fascinating subject but written in a boring manner. Aspects and some hypotheses are intriguing although at times naive. Anyway I feel gratified I have finisihed with it ~ why on earth is listed as a best seller, did everyone else read it or just leave it on their shelves?

McEwan at his best
Revisado: 01-19-08
Not a great fan of McEwan even after reading Enduring Love but I adored the way this was read, the way he writes and as a Brit living in America I could taste the English countryside, hear the sounds of winter bird song and feel the passion of two loyal lovers. No hesitation in recommending this to all that appreciate literature and a good "listen".
