late to the podcast
Revisado: 10-13-22
I have been a fan of Doc Watson since my uncle gave me my first guitar when I was 12 years old. I concentrated on his music and the various techniques that he had mastered, but knew very little of the man himself.
I was googling Doc recently trying to find out more about this genius and American treasure when I discovered that there was a biography written about him. Of course, I checked Audible to see if the book was there and found this podcast instead.
I knew a little about the man-- his entire life spent in Northwestern North Carolina, the loss of his beloved son, and a couple of antedotes-- but not very much else. I was so glad to see there was a podcast where this information would be dispensed and discussed. However. I am now heartsick to see that there has only been one episode and that the episode is three years old!!
what happened to the series? will there ever be anymore? I think a podcast is the idea platform for discussing the life of a person whose own education was based largely on oral tradition.

Historia
February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

A modern take on the Spoon River Anthology
Revisado: 10-16-21
I thoroughly enjoyed the performance of this book, and ended up "binge listening" to it. I only found one issue and that was the sex scene towards the end. I don't think that it had to be that explicit in order for the author to get his point across, and was out of character with the rest of the book. Other than that, it was great and reminded me both of the themes and of the ensemble presentation (which included Ed Asner) of The Spoon River Anthology.

one of the most riveting books that I have heard in a long while. Even though the story ends abruptly, it is captivating and heartbreaking. The performance was superb. I listened to it twice. And yes, I own two Great Pyrenees.

Historia
In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J. Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L. Trump, a trained clinical psychologist and Donald’s only niece, shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security, and social fabric.

unbelievable
Revisado: 08-30-20
I was overwhelmed by the number of issues with this book-- from the total lack of knowledge regarding the social and cultural atmosphere of the American, East Coast, Middle and Lower Class during the first half of the 1900's to the author's admitted devotion to Hillary Clinton. The family structure and family dynamics cited by the author as unique to the Trump family were the standard of the day--- all families were modeled this way to some extent. For someone with a PhD to try to twist this into a unique and horrible situation imposed upon only the Trump clan only shows the author's lack of integrity.
Listening to this book gave more insight into the motivations and beliefs of the "Never Trumpers" then into Donald Trump.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

it's a shame that everything that use to make us laugh and forget has become a constant reminder of the bigotry and hatred that is so prevalent in every day life.

Historia
In White Trash, Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early 19th century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.

A great historical view of classism in America
Revisado: 12-19-16
Anyone wishing to understand the current Socio-political landscape must read this. Through its historical perspective, poor white as s culture is examined as well as the lingering attitudes of the middle and upper classes towards this group. Accepting this group as a permanent fixture of American diversity can transform the way that we as a nation deal with poverty on both social and political levels.

Historia
Eighty-six-year-old Betty Halbreich is a true original. A tough broad who could have stepped straight out of Stephen Sondheim's repertoire, she has spent nearly forty years as the legendary personal shopper at Bergdorf Goodman, where she works with socialites, stars, and ordinary women off the street. She has helped many find their true selves through clothes, frank advice, and her own brand of wisdom. She is trusted by the most discriminating persons - including Hollywood's top stylists - to tell them what looks best.

Revisado: 06-16-16
Where does I'll Drink to That rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
In the top 90 percentile.
What did you like best about this story?
An autobiography about a real woman that found her niche and in doing so, allowed herself to grow. It is a reality story that makes each of us feel extraordinary.
Have you listened to any of Jane Curtin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This is the first book read by Jane Curtain that I have heard. The performance ranks up there with the best narrators and I will look for other works that she performs.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
This is reality!
Any additional comments?
A couple of places dragged towards the latter part of the book, but not by much!!

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Not many stories cover women's roles during the German occupation of France, but this one does in s spellbinding and soulful way. Both the story and narration were superb.
