Wonderful series
Revisado: 09-26-21
The story of the knight is a story of grace in many forms, for we all need grace. The setting reintroduces the concepts of honor, and being valiant in the strength of His might. It is also a love story, which intersects human love stories. Praise His name!

This Book Is A Huge Gift from God

This book so needed! Lament is a normal part of a walk with Jesus
Revisado: 02-06-20
It is hard to describe how much I needed to lament, and how ignorant of it being more than OK with God. I thought that it was just complaining, and I thought God hated that (Esther did too). I didn’t see how lamenting could lead to anything good. This book clears up that misconception. Lamenting leads to great things, a deeper walk with God being the first, and a whole lot more freedom and a whole lot less exhaustion being others. Thank you Esther. Thank you God for creating her with such love, courage, humility, and vulnerability.
A blog on Christian Single Dad points out that lamenting in community is harder for men. Men often see lament as weakness, and women often react with shame toward men who display real vulnerability. His advice at the end is good, lament with The Father, and pray for Him to send men for you to lament with.

God has promised us miracles. Are you willing to do what it takes to see them through? We all desire the favor of God on our lives. We eagerly pray and hope for his miracles, promises, and blessings. But carrying the promises of God often means being stretched, being inconvenienced, and being patient to nourish those promises until it is God's time for them to be born.

Sometimes it is hard to keep my bearings
Revisado: 12-17-19
For myself, and for some people that I love dearly, I need to overcome (Rev 12:13). That requires the blood of the Lamb, and the testimony of the saints. In the western, institutional church, testimonies have all but disappeared. Staying in union with The Father and Jesus, and depending on Holy Spirit is hard sometimes, many times. Not passing by the impoverished in Brooks Brothers suit is sometimes hard. This is an inspiring book. I want to just be with Him and be known as His.

As a follower of Jesus, this started to drag
Revisado: 07-22-19
Don’t get me wrong, the character development and the skill of the author are great. And the struggles for identity and calling along with mistakes are things that I recognize, in my own life, and in the lives of others. It reminds me to remember that I see but a little slice of time, and know a little slice of background. George R R Martin is a master of filling things in, including uncertain thoughts.
But just as I long for heaven, and the freedom from deception, lack of forgiveness, and manipulation (again, in my own life, as well as the lives of others) and the resulting pain. So do I grow a little tired of some of the characters and situations. I am not sure that I will finish the series.

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse - unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season. Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances....

Enjoyable, made me think.
Revisado: 06-25-19
I know that it is not common for fiction to make you think. Most fiction plays with emotion these days. They provide a means of escape. That is why I despise most of contemporary fiction.
But my son loved Game of Thrones, both the books and the HBO series, so I decided to give the books a try. The video series seemed to accentuate the sexuality of the series.
So, as a follower of Jesus, and a loving dad, I decided to read, and ask Holy Spirit to teach me as I went.
The first thing that I saw my heart sad. So many people lived with no purpose, no future, except to gratify pleasures. Ned Stark had more vision than the rest, it seemed. He considered honor, love, and justice. I came to like Jon Snow, and Robb Stark as well, as well as Arya Stark.
I really liked the realism of the fictional era, so similar to the late Middle Ages. And I asked God how He communicated His love to people living in such ignorance, injustice, and desperate for some love or a love substitute. Today is very different and yet the same. And I can see myself in a modern version of the same themes and responses.
I do like fiction authors who also teach people to look for the hand or the finger of Jesus.
Still, I looked.
Overall, it gave me many opportunity to appreciate the skills of a highly skilled author. I also appreciated an outstanding voice talent.
It gives me opportunity as well to pray for the people of the Middle Ages and the modern version of it. I pray as well that I would have conversation with people who have not had the chance to meet Jesus and experience the love of God, but who do enjoy The Game of Thrones.

For as long as he can remember, Blake K. Healy has seen angels and demons. He sees them as clearly as he would see you if you were standing right in front of him. He sees angels dancing in worship services and whispering words of encouragement in people's ears. He also sees demons latching on to people and perpetuating addiction and bitterness in their hearts. The Veil chronicles how Blake matured in this gifting, while overcoming the fear and confusion of what he saw.

44 years of following Jesus, and still deeper things
Revisado: 04-27-19
I have been a mainline Christian, a fundamentalist Christian, a legalistic Christian, a charismatic Christian, a legalistic charismatic Christian, and now more of a confused, ignorant follower of Jesus, knowing there is more, seeing it unfold, forgetting half of it and ending up more desiring Him than ever. This helped me see new horizons. And Jesus used it to break me free of some pride and some obstacles. Thank you.

The difference in their uncanny eyes could not be easily discerned. In the rays of the setting sun, both Aravel's and Morlan's eyes appeared gold. In the pale moonlight...yellow. Seemingly the same. Such inscrutable likeness is the way of things with identical twins. But all who knew the two brothers well noted unmistakable differences, peculiarities more experienced than seen.

Historia
In Feel, Matthew Elliott takes a critical look at what our culture and many churches have taught about controlling and ignoring our emotions. He contends that some of the great thinkers of the modern era got it all wrong, and that the Bible teaches that God intends for us to live in and through our emotions. Emotions are good things that God created us to feel. Matthew helps us to understand our emotions and equips us to nurture healthy feelings and reject destructive ones.

Frustrating but good, a swing the pendulum book
Revisado: 09-04-18
God blessed me through the book. My pendulum needed a nudge, well maybe more than a nudge. But this is an example of what I call the 2 ditch method of getting off the road and away from God.
He basically calls the institutional western church to task for fearing the gift of emotions. And he goes back to scripture, to show that it doesn’t have the same shaming tone that you hear from a lot of pulpits.
I desire to receive emotions as the gift they are, and to remember that we have them because we are made in God’s image. I also agree with Longman and Allender in “The Cry of the Soul: What our emotions reveal about our deepest questions about God” that emotions have a purpose and it has to do with connecting with God. In a lot of ways, we should seek the truth to combine with the emotion, as a lot of people trust emotions rather than trusting God. But seeking the truth is a good start, as Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. A great illustration of needing truth with emotion comes from one of Steven Covey’s books as he speaks of perspective. He gives the example of riding a train in NYC when a dad an 4 children get on. The dad doesn’t exert any influence over his children who are going wild on the strain. Covey’s emotions are irritation and indignation. He finally speaks to the man, and the man admits that he is out of it, and says that they just came from the hospital where his wife and the children’s mother just passed away. Covey’s emotions changed to sorrow and compassion, only the truth was added.
So, all of this is simpler than it looks. Holy Spirit is the real power, and does work through emotions.
Asking Holy Spirit or Jesus for the truth is something He delights in, though you may have to wait for an answer sometimes, which will rub control the wrong way.
But loving is always part of it, and loving often includes emotion, but the emotion that comes from loving your enemy is not the one the i normally associate with love.
The bottom line is that He is interested in your/my emotions. We are told to pour out our heart to God. And we are treasured by Him, and that includes the emotions that He has given us.
God still met me in this book, though sometimes it was painful to read, because I feared that people would get derailed the other way, and miss the Lord invitation to connect. What it has done for me is to help me to hear God’s voice more clearly when I journal, as He will often ask me how I was feeling when something occurred to me or something happened. That is wonderful. And I look forward to hearing those types of questions more as I go about my day.

God met me in this story ... even though ...
Revisado: 04-04-18
The “even though” has to do with the kind of resolution that is needed in a story, is not true of my life (or at least I can’t recognize it yet )
So I can’t say what God will do with you, but in parts of the story, it was like He gave me a wink, and challenged me to look beyond some situations to Him.
Thank you, Jesus.

An illuminating example of friendship as a vital way God answers our need for guidance, encouragement, affirmation, and correction. Most of the time, what we need to help us through the struggles in our lives is not the advice of an expert but the wisdom of a friend. Through this series of eloquent letters written to a life-long friend, author Eugene Peterson demonstrates friendship as a means to Christian maturity.

Wow was this refreshing!
Revisado: 03-13-18
God keeps impressing upon me that everything about this world he has created and everything about himself is relational.
Personally, over the years, I have followed some wrong paths and have gotten beat up by other people following some wrong paths. I have been given grace to forgive, and be forgiven. It has been my own errors in understanding God‘s reality that have been the most confusing.
This book, affirmed many of the things that I believe to be true. It has also provided not a short list of things that I believe to be true that I need to look at again.
Thank you, Lord Jesus, and thank you, Eugene Peterson.
