Classic Detectives
Revisado: 01-17-25
I'm always a big fan of Nightvale productions, but I think Joseph and Jeffrey have really done something special with this series. I am usually not a huge fan of crime novels. Many are overly salacious without reason or can be incredibly predictable. While I am able to figure out a few things, there are always twists that I didn't see coming with this series. The characterization is very clear and they utilize multi-cast narration so well. Overall, the story feels like a real classic detective story and keeps me engaged beginning to end!

Worst and Best
Revisado: 01-12-25
I like that this showcases much of the worst and best parts of society and humanity. It's not a difficult future reality to imagine and the characters are especially realistic. I also appreciated the choice to do a multi-cast production!

Historia
In the town of Night Vale, there’s a faceless old woman who secretly lives in everyone’s home, but no one knows how she got there or where she came from...until now. Told in a series of eerie flashbacks, the story of The Faceless Old Woman goes back centuries to reveal an initially blissful and then tragic childhood on a Mediterranean Estate in the early 19th century, her rise in the criminal underworld of Europe, a nautical adventure with a mysterious organization of smugglers, her plot for revenge on the ones who betrayed her, and ultimately her death and its aftermath.

Wonderfully Twisted
Revisado: 03-23-24
I love Mara Wilson as always. I also loved the realness of character despite her being a fantastical/mythological being. I kept waiting for twists and there were many, none of which I really predicted despite knowing how her story would end, or at least where she would end up.

Historia
Spensa’s life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus, and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell - the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. What’s more, she traveled light-years from home as an undercover spy to infiltrate the Superiority, where she learned of the galaxy beyond her small planet home. Now, the Superiority - the governing galactic alliance bent on dominating all human life - has started a galaxy-wide war.

Sadly Surprised
Revisado: 12-20-22
I really didn't want to believe the other reviews but it was HARD to get through this book. I liked the initial premise and it flowed well until about ch. 12 then it was like watching paint dry until ch. 30. I understand that relationships are important to the protagonist but in the long run they seemed to have little to do with the main plot. I think it really would have been better writing to include Evershore in this book and have both Spensa and Jorgens perspectives playing out. That said this series continues to have the best action scenes I've ever read/listened to.

Unlike others...
Revisado: 07-18-22
I genuinely don't understand all the reviews about the book being overly gruesome? I felt that the torture scenes and descriptions of battle were just realistic given the circumstances of the book. I agree that the characters are dark but given their ages it makes sense to me that they are still selfish and trying to figure out what to do. Especially given most the characters are trained assassins it shouldn't be surprising. I do feel that the pacing of the series is a little slow. It was hard to keep track of all the prophecies and how they were fitting together.

Within the Reckoning?
Revisado: 03-19-22
I knew the damselfly story was familiar and couldn't figure out why until I re-listened to cassette 1 of Within the Wires 😂 I listened to the first few episodes of the podcasts years ago and didn't even realize their connection till almost the end of the book. I now have to re-listen to the podcast. Overall I loved the found manuscript feel of this story and was conflicted on which side to trust which is of course, the whole part. As a character Miriam isn't always likeable which I appreciate because it makes her more real. Additionally the narrators were perfectly fitted to the voices they represent.

Skippy
Revisado: 01-16-22
Okay skippy sounds weird but that's what this book did. it skipped back and forth from narrators to timelines and back again. Ch. 22 to 26 I could barely tell what was going on. I really liked the first book, but I feel like this one got rushed or something. Speaking of rushing...I think there needed to be a lot more relationship building between Jane and Ian for me to understand their choices in this one.

Not What You Think
Revisado: 07-16-21
I thought I knew exactly where this book was going and was happily thrown off my guesses several times. I really love Ellen and Pamela as character and their development. The relationships are very well crafted even though it does make the overall storytelling a little long, it's worth it. To be fair to the author she did craft a story that spans 80+ years. She also does a fantastic job describing everything vividly, which for me made it quite emotional.
