Historia
Eastern Europe has long been thought of as the "Other Europe", a region rife with political upheaval, shifting national borders, an astonishing variety of ethnic diversity, and relative isolation from the centers of power in the West. It has also been, and continues to be, pivotal in the course of world events. A History of Eastern Europe offers a sweeping 1,000-year tour with a particular focus on the region's modern history.

If your family...
Revisado: 01-07-24
is from Eastern Europe, this is a "must listen". Most of my family is from Hungary, Slovakia regions even bending into what is now Russia. I have worked on my lineage for 30 years, and I found it helpful when working on a person to understand what their world was like in the region & time they came from. I don't want to see their world through my "today" eyes. Some things are hard to listen to, and you do shake your head in "why?" throughout it all. It's so important for our children and grandchildren to understand this too (and yes, not to dilute American History).

I loved the story idea of the years of sewing ledgers kept by the user of the sewing machine. But I kinda got lost in the story line of where the time jumps were all leading to. And then poof the book was over. The characters are endearing, but it seemed like it could use a little more reference to the ending.

Historia
Life in a Medieval City is the classic account of the year 1250 in the city of Troyes, in modern-day France. Acclaimed historians Frances and Joseph Gies focus on a high point of medieval civilization - before war and the Black Death ravaged Europe - providing a fascinating window into the sophistication of a period we too often dismiss as backward. Urban life in the Middle Ages revolved around the home, often a mixed-use dwelling for burghers with a store or workshop on the ground floor and living quarters upstairs.

Historia
The Tudor period conjures up images of queens and noblewomen in elaborate court dress, of palace intrigue and dramatic politics. But if you were a woman, it was also a time when death during childbirth was rife, when marriage was usually a legal contract, not a matter for love, and the education you could hope to receive was minimal at best. Yet the Tudor century was also dominated by powerful and dynamic women in a way that no era had been before.

long overdrawn
Revisado: 04-24-11
The narration to this story was very good, but I found myself getting lost with the characters. It seems the story line (and I realize it was written quite a few years ago) is long. After the first half, I've lost interest, as the wording could be better. But then again, it was written quite a few years ago.

Historia
Though they've lived their entire lives less than five blocks from each other, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders exist in very different worlds. Reuven blends easily into both his secular Jewish faith and his typical American teen life, while Danny's conservative Hasidic clothes and appearance make him stick out in any crowd. Their improbable friendship teaches them that the differences separating people through cultures and generations are never as great as they seem.

"Must Read" for every parent
Revisado: 03-26-11
This story follows a delicate friendship of two Jewish lads, David & Ruven, their fathers and their different Jewish faiths (one Hassidic, the other not). There are few characters to keep up with but the last chapter is so moving, about understanding your children, not necessarily liking it, but loving them. I wish I would have read this years ago, perhaps my own angst with my children would not have been so dividing.

for medieval stories, and POTE had my attention from start to finish. Again, a little bit more "happily ever after" and good things to the characters would not hurt, you just get tired of disappointments, but nonetheless an excellent read

Ken Follett's World Without End was a global phenomenon, a work of grand historical sweep beloved by millions of readers and acclaimed by critics. Fall of Giants is his magnificent new historical epic. The first novel in The Century Trilogy, it follows the fates of five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they move through the world-shaking dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women's suffrage.

WWI adventure
Revisado: 03-02-11
I found some of the characters long and overdrawn with KF's WWI trilogy. I'm a tad disappointed that the American and Marines of WWI were not mentioned in the fighting scenes as they did make a huge contribution (but that's my take). I want to see Ken write a little bit more 'happily ever after' to his story lines. The disappointments in his books tend to be exhausting. Good listen, tho!

When Blinking Jack Stokes met Ruby Pitt Woodrow, she was twenty and he was forty. She was a carefully raised daughter of Carolina gentry and he was a skinny tenant farmer who had never owned anything in his life. She was newly widowed after a disastrous marriage to a brutal drifter. He had never asked a woman to do more than help him hitch a mule. They didn't fall in love so much as they simply found each other and held on for dear life.

I like that the narration went from female to male voice, made it easier to follow. Not a great story line for adventure, but surely one for love and devotion.
