Historia
Colin is a druid on a mission. Namely, traveling to an alternate dimension where technology rules, to snag the tech he needs to save his friends in the Hellpocalypse timeline. At first, it sounds simple. He’ll slip through the timestreams, do a little sightseeing, and go home. Heck, it might even be fun to visit a world where actual superheroes exist. But for creation’s unluckiest druid, nothing is ever easy. When things go horribly wrong, Colin finds that his magic is almost completely on the fritz.

Genre-aware superhero story in a dark world
Revisado: 03-19-25
Only 43 reviews is quite surprising. As an aficionado of Audible's non-mainstream superhero offerings, I'd rate this quite highly. I'm a Spidey fan and know all my Marvel/DC usuals but love the origin story and the sense of optimistic hope the genre offers (more than the hopelessness in some). This drops an existing powered individual into a seemingly usual golden age world. The premise is that his usual powers are on the fritz and he's now mostly an energy wielder with healing factor and toughness. He accidentally paints himself a villain and realises the golden age isn't so golden. All the usual DC character tropes are present -- some as allies, most as opponents.
Ends on a cliffhanger so better labelled as part 1.
I'm now off to part 2!

Gorm is horrified to discover a liche pitching the frightened city-dwellers on the merits of the undead lifestyle...at the head of a corpse army. While the names are puns and the premise seems trivial, I promise this might be one of the best fantasy series you'll have ever read. Remind me very strongly of Terry Pratchett with subtle observational humour and no so subtle word play and puns. However the observations are smart and obviously based on the financial ruin of recent years including the fall of many American banks. Couple that with excellently voiced great characters with satisfying development and a superb overarching 3 book plot and topped a dramatic reveal, this easily ranks as one of the greats.

Historia
Anna Kendrick's autobiographical collection of essays amusingly recounts memorable moments throughout her life, from her middle-class upbringing in New England to the blockbuster movies that have made her one of Hollywood's most popular actresses today. Expanding upon the witty and ironic dispatches for which she is known, Anna Kendrick's essays offer her one-of-a-kind commentary on the absurdities she's experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture.

Either a wonderfully earnest view from an introverted anxious human being or diabolically clever piece of P.R.
I'll be recommending to the parent friend of a child who wishes to be a star... only up to the penultimate chapter though.

Historia
In the year 2107, the world has both made astounding leaps forward and reduced humanity to its most basic existence. While the megacorps and those who rule them enjoy lives of extraordinary comfort and ease, most people barely scrape by, doing whatever they can to keep going. Juliet Bianchi is one of the latter. She works cutting metal in a scrapyard and doesn't have much to show for it except for a small group of equally bereft, fiercely loyal friends. Still, she maintains a bright disposition, possessing more hope and optimism than anyone would expect her to—and she's going to need it.

Superb cyberpunk, Shadowrun minus the magic
Revisado: 11-06-24
A superb cyberpunk story with a classic Hero's Journey. Some lovely human touches with an un-jaded innocent resisting becoming a dark murder hobo and trying to give people a chance.
Has an annoying habit of setting up what feels like it will be a surprise then having nothing happen -- like a horror film waiting for the other shoe to drop. Felt like a wasted opportunity.
In summary, a great cyber-story in the usual pessimistic corp-ruled future but with a kernel of innocent hope.
Bought on sale and now avidly waiting for my next credits to continue the series.

The world teeters on the brink of destruction. The people who should be saving the Earth ignore Jason Asano's warnings and choose to loot the house as it burns down around them. He lacks the strength to save the world himself, but resolves to do it anyway, impossible be damned. The impossible, in this case, means seizing a power that no mortal should touch. It's a choice from which there is no turning back, and marks Jason's first step into a wider cosmos that he is not yet ready to face. Holding the fate of two worlds in his hands, Jason must decide for himself what home truly means.

What a treat to combine comedy with action and character development in wonderful plots in plots. The succulent selection provided by a bevvy of relatable characters we move between means the palate is always refreshed. Garnished with Easter-egg like pop cultural references and it's certainly a treat worthwhile savouring.
No time for dessert, for now I must return to the next main course of the next book! 😀

Historia
Dorky, socially awkward entomology student Evelyn wakes up one morning to find herself as some sort of alien-human hybrid trapped on an unknown planet. Once the initial panic winds down, she quickly learns she's capable of producing more of herself: additional bodies all sharing one mind. Being well-versed in sci-fi tropes, she quickly resolves to not devour the planet and turn into an unflinching biological armada, and instead uses her new powers to try and help as many people as possible. Unfortunately, it turns out that helping people is often very, very difficult.

Fascinating insights, cute tenor and some super philosophy
Revisado: 04-29-24
A fascinating tale from the point of view of and therefore with insight into the mind of someone 'on the spectrum' -- in this case self describing as anxiety and likely autistic. A young woman who obviously struggles but perseveres -- quite the heartening tale. Read in a cute and perky style leaving you feeling a warm glow despite the sometimes objectively quite sad situations. Blend in a rational/humanistic philosophical discussion with plenty of science and some political notes and I would summarise as a superb book.
Spoiler and content warning:
Some swearing so not for kids and a light girl-girl romantic 'will they, won't they' sub-plot (nothing graphical though -- just mentioned in case that offends you).

Acuff knows the reason why many writers' novels go unfinished - it's the same reason why gyms are filled in the first week of January and empty by the end of the month and why people stop learning a new language once they get past the easy parts. It's not just that people lose momentum or get distracted. People give up on projects when they fail to live up to their own high expectations and decide that if they can't do something perfectly, they won't do it at all. If you're going to finish, you have to kill perfectionism.

MC starts off a bit repugnant but improves
Revisado: 03-03-24
Just having finished another time loop story (the excellent fantasy ”Mother of Learning”), I felt the need for more. This one had the MC be much more narcissistic but, as you start to learn how background, it starts to make sense. Honestly the fact that he has redeeming aspects is quite astonishing. He does seem to be a little OP but still fails enough to feel 'real'. Not much personal growth in this book 1 but hopeful for the coming books. onwards and upwards!
