Historia
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

A thoroughly Britwashed Irish novel
Revisado: 04-16-24
This is a novel written by an author who graduated from Trinity College Dublin and has lived in Dublin for years. The significant characters are all Irish. They come from different regions of Ireland, different social classes, different religious backgrounds. The main character is a middle-class Irishman who affects a British accent he learned at school. The book notes the different accents of several characters, and the significance of those accents to the other characters and to the plot. AND YET the narrator is a British classical actor who makes no attempt to capture any of the various Irish accents that are so central to the novel. This 'britwashing' of the novel's accents and rhythms impoverishes the audiobook by eliminating a central plot element of the book and of Irish life. This deficit in the narration is initially surprising, gradually becomes frustrating, then enraging, then ultimately saddening. This is too good a book to give such a tone-deaf and careless treatment.

Historia
When a bomb destroys the Special Irish Branch of Scotland Yard, all fingers point to the increasingly brazen factions of Irish dissidents seeking liberation from English rule. Volunteering their services to the British government, Cyrus Barker and Thomas Llewelyn set out to infiltrate a secret cell of the Irish Republican Brotherhood known as the Invisibles. Posing as a reclusive German bomb maker and his anarchist apprentice, they are recruited for the group's ultimate plan: to bring London to its knees and end the monarchy forever.

Tragically bad accents

Can't listen any more. German accent rendered as Jamaican. Irish accents devolve into Scottish. Acceptable story made intolerable by narration.

Historia
Mankind has long dreamed of reaching out to live on other planets, and with the establishment of the Mars Endeavour colony, that dream has become reality. The fledgling colony consists of 120 scientists, astronauts, medical staff, and engineers. Buried deep underground, they're protected from the harsh radiation that sterilizes the surface of the planet. The colony is prepared for every eventuality except one - what happens when disaster strikes Earth?

Tedious, dithering female caricatureby Male author
Revisado: 11-09-20
The female "straw man" protagonist feels naive, preachy, ineffectual. She is sometimes maundering, sometimes hysterical, and always hard to like. The author has created an unflattering caricature unqualified to be where she is. Feels to me like an implicit criticism of professional women in the guise of an ostensibly self- reflective "female" protagonist.

Historia
Secrets, mistaken identities, surprise revelations, amnesia, locked rooms and locked asylums, and an unorthodox villain made this mystery thriller an instant success when it first appeared in 1860, and it has continued to enthrall ever since. From the hero's foreboding before his arrival at Limmeridge House to the nefarious plot concerning the beautiful Laura, the breathtaking tension of Collins's narrative created a new literary genre of suspense fiction, which profoundly shaped the course of English popular writing.

Brilliant melodrama and social critique
Revisado: 10-18-20
This book is a fascinating critique of marriage laws and domestic customs as they existed in 1860. It's also a compelling melodrama and portrait of domestic inequities at the time in England. It is narrated in the voices of a series of characters in the story, which provides for fascinating insights and amusing bits of characterisation. It still feels topical and exciting.

Historia
S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (i.e. "those idiots"), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos®. Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to think something isn't quite right. Even the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis, fails to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis.

Coarse humor often misses the mark
Revisado: 09-27-20
Broad, juvenile humor and sloppy writing make this otherwise engaging story hard to tolerate. Does a disservice to Corvid authors.

1965 hubristic spy story with awkward BDSM vibe
Revisado: 09-13-20
Full of 1960s pop psychoanalysis, theories of memory and cringe-inducing gender models. Protagonist is arrogant and analytical to a fault, yet repeatedly contrives to get caught and roughed up by muscley Nazis. A deadly serious Austin Powers.

Historia
The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Fun, engaging, but painfully dated.
Revisado: 03-13-20
Published in 1990, but reads like the jokes were written in 1980. Contemporary issues such as the Bermuda Triangle, spontaneous human combustion, Japanese accents, answering machines, the music of Freddie Mercury, and the annoyances of telemarketers, are discussed in a humorous, curmudgeonly fashion. Younger listeners can learn what their grandparents were joking about in the late 1970s.
Despite this awkwardness the book is well worth listening to. It's warm and engaging with some compelling moments. Just be prepared.

Historia
When treasure hunters excavate the long-lost wreck of the Steamship Arcadia from a Kansas corn field, a buried creature awakens - a mindless brute made of accursed earth, shaped like a man, but in no way mortal. A century and a half after its creation, the golem’s sole mission resumes: to assassinate a savage pro-slavery guerilla commander named “Bloody Bill” Wolcott. Wolcott, of course, is long dead, but his closest surviving descendant - a corporate IT burnout named Ben Middleton - is quite available.

Interesting plot ruined by wooden characters
Revisado: 02-20-20
Ham- fisted characterization, tin-eared dialogue. Adults made to found like bickering Disney channel YA characters. Tedious histrionics to no narrative purpose. Insufferable. Kept wishing the monster would dismember them all.
