Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

This book is extremely interesting, very high-level, but enough information to make you feel like you have somewhat of a introduction level knowledge. Very eye-opening.

Everyone who makes the journey faces an impossible choice. Hundreds of thousands of people who arrive every year at the US-Mexico border travel far from their homes. For years, the majority came from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, but many more have begun their journey much farther away. Some flee persecution, others crime or hunger. They may have already been deported, but the United States remains their only hope for safety and prosperity. They will take their chances.

Worth the time, a lot of investment though
Revisado: 04-18-24
I read and listen to a lot of nonfiction books, particularly United States and United States history history. When I got this book, I was expecting more along the lines of typical nonfiction books, going through policies and events, which this book definitely does. However, there is a lot of storytelling in here. Which, at first was kind of a turn off for me and I was about ready to stop listening. Not that the stories were not appealing, but I wanted to talk more about the events and policies. Over the course of the book, I grew to appreciate the stories that were told. All of them had their own significance and I got a real prospective of what it must’ve been like for these people who were just trying to get better lives. To me, as someone who knows little to no immigration history, or anything like that, the idea that most of these people Were not looking to the US as thier home, they were looking to go back to their home countries. That fact, kind of made me look at it a different angle. As my title says, this book is a lot of investment as a listener in my opinion, but worth it

Historia
Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus' landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last 30 years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.

Worth a listen
Revisado: 11-29-21
This was a very fascinating book. As someone who has read a lot about early American history, I did not have a lot of knowledge around Indian culture before the 1700s.
Although it was very interesting, and I feel a lot more informed, I did feel like it went into a lot of detail that I was not really interested in any such as the Amazon.
I checked out this book more to hear about North America Indians I was surprised at the amount of information related to South America, even though it was helpful and somewhat related. I do wish it talked about North America more than it did.

Historia
More than 40 years after it ended, the Vietnam War continues to haunt our country. We still argue over why we were there, whether we could have won, and who was right and wrong in their response to the conflict. When the war divided the country, it created deep political fault lines that continue to divide us today. Now, continuing in the tradition of their critically acclaimed collaborations, the authors draw on dozens and dozens of interviews in America and Vietnam to give us the perspectives of people involved at all levels of the war.

A great 360 story of the war
Revisado: 03-16-21
I came into this book having listened or read 2 books on the war. I was looking for a in-depth book and this delivered. I am sure that it left some parts out and everyone might not agree with some of the highlights of the book. I think it can agree that it gave a 360° view of the war that is exactly what I wanted. It is definitely worth a listen and sticking with it.

Historia
In 1868 Congress impeached President Andrew Johnson of Tennessee, the man who had succeeded the murdered Lincoln, bringing the nation to the brink of a second civil war. Enraged to see the freed slaves abandoned to brutal violence at the hands of their former owners, distraught that former rebels threatened to regain control of Southern state governments, and disgusted by Johnson's brawling political style, congressional Republicans seized on a legal technicality as the basis for impeachment - whether Johnson had the legal right to fire his own secretary of war, Edwin Stanton.

Revisado: 12-12-19
I have picked this book because of the current events going on in Washington with impeachment of Trump. This book was very well written and explained the complexities that was going on at the time of Johnson’s impeachment. This has demonstrated that Johnson was experiencing a very rare circumstance compared to other presidents who have faced impeachment. I have learned that due to the circumstances there are miss information about the impeachment process and the historical ramifications of it. On the other side, I have learned that the dealings were very corrupt in nature, which has me wondering what is really going onIn Washington today as we face another impeachment process. Very detailed and long, but highly recommend

Historia
William Howard Taft never wanted to be president and yearned to serve as chief justice of the United States. In this assessment, author Jeffrey Rosen reveals Taft's crucial role in shaping how America balances populism against the rule of law. Taft approached each decision as president by asking whether it comported with the Constitution, seeking to put Roosevelt's activist executive orders on firm legal grounds. But unlike Roosevelt, who thought the president could do anything the Constitution didn't forbid, Taft insisted he could do only what the Constitution explicitly allowed.

A great brief history of Taft
Revisado: 09-11-19
I thought it was a great brief summary of Taft. It was definitely brief and was not as detailed as some of the other biographies I have read, but it covered a wide range of issues. My opinion is, they spent too much time talking about the quarrel between him and Roosevelt.

Even though this book is extremely detailed And at times I thought about not finishing it due to its length, this book was a great read and I am glad that I have finished it.
If you want to read one book and have a mild understanding of what happened on June 6, 1944, this is the book that you should read.
I had goosebumps just as an American reading this book.

Historia
James M. McPherson, professor emeritus of U.S. history at Princeton, is one of the foremost scholars of the Civil War. In this informative and meticulously researched masterpiece, he clarifies the differing ways of life and philosophy that led to this shattering conflict. Abraham Lincoln wondered whether "in a free government the minority have the right to break up the government". And Jefferson Davis felt "forced to take up arms" to guarantee states' rights.

The amount of detail in this is ridiculously tantalizing.
Even better was the scope that was new to fully understand the lead up/true causes of the war.

The 13 chapters of The Art of War, each devoted to one aspect of warfare, were compiled by the high-ranking Chinese military general, strategist, and philosopher Sun-Tzu. In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

Historia
When a Serbian-backed assassin gunned down Archduke Franz Ferdinand in late June 1914, the world seemed unmoved. Even Ferdinand’s own uncle, Franz Josef I, was notably ambivalent about the death of the Hapsburg heir, saying simply, "It is God’s will." Certainly, there was nothing to suggest that the episode would lead to conflictmuch less a world war of such massive and horrific proportions that it would fundamentally reshape the course of human events.
