Historia
Jonna Hiestand Mendez began her CIA career as a “contract wife” performing secretarial duties for the CIA as a convenience to her husband, a young officer stationed in Europe. She needed his permission to open a bank account or shut off the gas to their apartment. Yet Mendez had a talent for espionage, too, and she soon took on bigger and more significant roles at the Agency. She parlayed her interest in photography into an operational role overseas, an unlikely area for a woman in the CIA.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Powerful and courageous. Heart moving and raw. Drop the mic!
Revisado: 05-11-24
Britney Spears’ book chronicling her experiences and life’s journey showcases her talent as a writer, her kindness, and her humanity. I love how Britney shares openly and weaves in experiences from various stages and roles in her life: little child, daughter, sister, point guard, lover, wife, mother, friend, entertainer, spiritual woman, trauma survivor. Thank you Britney for sharing your experiences, the impact we can have on each other by being kind thoughtful and encouraging (or not) and the power of being a praying woman. And a badass b!

Historia
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Moving, heart felt experiences and perspective from her culture and as a professional. Fact-based yet not emotionally charged recounting of historic injustices as related to land, insulting views of Native American planting and harvesting techniques.
Positive or adverse environmental impacts based on our values, recognition and acceptance of stewardship of earth, communities, and future generations. Specific yet gentle with ourselves examples of actions we can take, within our capabilities. Beautiful.

While the world seems to be in love with the idea of tiny houses and minimalism, many of us simply can't purge it all and start from nothing. Yet a home with too much stuff is difficult to maintain, so where do we begin? Add in paralyzing emotional attachments and constant life challenges, and it can feel almost impossible to make real decluttering progress.

Totally related to the concept of holding onto things because they might be useful way down the line, of if have duplicates, etc. That was a game changer for me. Then the specific, practical directions got me in action.
I didn’t like some of her life examples, which seemed extreme or far-fetched (but maybe she was as sloppy and messy as she described)

Historia
Combining the expertise of a biblical scholar and a missionary practitioner, Misreading Scripture with Individualist Eyes is an essential guidebook to the cultural background of the Bible and how it should inform our reading. E. Randolph Richards and Richard James explore deep social structures of the ancient Mediterranean - kinship, patronage, and brokerage-along with their key social tools-honor, shame, and boundaries - that the biblical authors lived in and lie below the surface of each text.

Samuel L. Jackson + Story = Must Listen
Revisado: 03-05-23
Samuel L. Jackson showed off his acting talents!! consistent narration of multiple characters voices and personalities transported me into the story and Harlem. Listened during a flight and couldn’t wait to get home to finish listening and find out what would happen next.
Definitely recommend audible with SLJ as narrator versus reading
