I little too Jesus-y, hetero, and sexist for my taste. I feel like there should be a warning on it.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Storyline gone wild...
Revisado: 03-31-23
This book was nothing amazing, but basically pretty decent until the plot completely jumped the shark about 3/4 of the way through. I tried explaining it to my husband on the ride to work this morning, and we ended up laughing so hard i thought I was going to pee my pants. That said, I did finish listening, because really, it was so nuts, I just had to find out how far the author was going to take it. Answer: too far.

If you’re a fan of worn out story lines, stereotypes, and one dimensional characters then you’ll love this book.
However there is a really heartfelt message that manages to find its way through the unoriginal muck.

All seem to be entangled in a puzzling web of municipal corruption, blackmail, and industrial espionage. A shell-shocked World War II veteran nicknamed the Ragman may hold the key to it all - but only if Joe can get him to talk before the murderer strikes again.

An elegant mystery
Revisado: 04-15-21
Well-written, astonishingly elegant, and still believable. Despite the fact that Mayor must be on the payroll for the Brattleboro Board of Anti-Tourism, his sense of place is deeply soulful--full of understanding and acceptance. I hope to see Joe Gunther end up as one of the greats in the annals of crime fiction.

Narrator lacks range. Female characters need work.
Revisado: 03-04-21
I'm on the fence. On the one hand, I loved touring Chicago through the eyes (and stomach!) of Ashe Cayne. He's a good protagonist (though I'm not a fan of the whole Ashe-as-sociopath subplot. I kind of hope the author drops that in the next book).
The narrator has a great voice. But, unfortunately, just one great voice. It was hard to keep track of who was talking, as everyone sounded the same. And at times, my mind wandered because of all the sameness.
I found the author's depiction of women troubling. First of all, they all need to eat more. All this nibbling, and delicate biting is stupid. Women don't eat like that. I hope Ashe finds a lady that enjoys their meals as much has he does.
All that said, I'll read the next one. And may try another book by the same author.

A stunningly original reimagining of a classic
Revisado: 02-04-21
Sherry Thomas has won me over with her re-cast of some of my favorite characters in classic fiction! Not just re-writes but truly original characters; from Lord Bancroft and Mrs. Dr. Watson, to Charlotte Holmes herself. While doing so, she's not only created an opportunity to introduce an entirely new ensemble cast, but also manages to shoot a laser into the very heart of our assumptions and misconceptions about the female intellect. I can not recommend this series enough! Brava, Ms. Thomas!

The narrator takes some getting used to
Revisado: 10-20-20
It took me a while to get used to the narrator's slow monotone. But after a while, you get used to her, and she ends up being the perfect voice for the story.
This is a good mystery, full of twists and turns. It satisfies on all levels.

There's a good story here, but it's buried under a stinking shit-pile of narcissism, thoroughly unlikeable people, grating repetition, and confusing leaps between timelines. Could use some editing.

This exciting new series from New York Times best-selling author Ally Carter focuses on Grace, who can best be described as a daredevil, an Army brat, and a rebel. She is also the only granddaughter of perhaps the most powerful ambassador in the world, and Grace has spent every summer of her childhood running across the roofs of Embassy Row. Now, at age 16, she's come back to stay in order to solve the mystery of her mother's death.

Revisado: 07-07-19
I often like listening to YA books, but this one, not so much. Perhaps if I were a 16 y-o girl I'd appreciate it a lot more. But for me, the heroine is overly histrionic, the narration is overdone, and the setting is just a little too implausible.
