I don’t know what other reviewers listened to. Starting with a provocative premise, the story immediately grinds to a crawl. The characters are two-dimensional — or one-dimensional — and inexcusably dull-witted; there is no sense of urgency, in spite of a stated life-and-death emergency; and two inherently technologically sexy locations — a spacecraft on atmospheric reentry and Fermi Lab — are rendered colorless and flat. Even the narrator sounds bored. Taken together, the effect is aggressively tedious.

I rarely submit a negative review, but (my) life is too short for this book. I don’t even want to know how it stretches to a trilogy.

This is a pleasant light read — a fantasy of magic and intrigue set in an approximately late 19th century London and loosely patterned after a Brontë romance. Elizabeth Knowelden is a well matched narrator. However, Joel Froomkin, for some bizarre reason, declaims and shouts his way through the material as though he has no other performance options at his disposal and has no conception whatsoever of the story he's reading. Fortunately he has a relatively small minority of the novel, but even so it's jarringly annoying.

This is probably a good book. However, whether as a result of the voice actor’s unfortunate choices or the producer’s direction, the performance renders the story and the characters flat, dull, off-key, and frequently annoying. I finished it mostly out of obstinacy.

I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this audiobook. At first I thought the narrator must have had some good reason for the bizarre and deeply annoying voice of the mother. But I couldn’t stick it out long enough to find out if that was true. As a result, I can’t say whether the story is any good. I gave up after the first hour or so.

Granted, the protagonists were extremely slow in the uptake, and the purportedly formidable emperor turned out to be not much quicker, but against the backdrop of current events, this Austen homage provided a welcome and ultimately very sweet diversion.

I finished this book a day ago and I'm still trying to figure out why it got so many great reviews. An unprepossessing protagonist bumbles his way to success for no discernible reason, mildly baffling the other characters and himself in the process. Based on the reviews and the title, I kept waiting for the penny to drop, but it didn't. Maybe in a subsequent book?

Nothing memorable about the setup, characters, dialogue, or narrative, and no apparent rationale behind the plot. I remember playing D&D being a lot more fun and creative than this.

Pretty good for a freshman comp assignment, and demonstrating just about as much maturity .The main characters are self-satisfied idiots, the plot is transparent, and the Ayn Randian nerds rule moral of the story is the crowning groaner.

Absolutely perfect casting to call on Jason Isaacs for this second-person narrative from the extraordinary N. K. Jemisin that deftly manages (as she does) to be both searing and optimistic.

My only major complaint about these two books is that they were too enjoyable to be so brief.

Then again, I might *be* Murderbot.

I’m having feelings about this. I need to read / hear / watch more excellent entertainments. Preferably featuring Murderbot.
