Historia
Part human comedy and part mystery, Lies the Mushroom Pickers Told is an enthralling, masterful story about what holds a village together and what keeps people apart. When journalist Patrick Bracken returns to Gohen, the Irish village where he was born, he knows the eyes of the townspeople are on him. He has come home to investigate two deaths that happened decades earlier when he was a child, deaths that were ruled accidental.

Another Reader’s Read!
Revisado: 12-17-20
As I have mentioned about only a few other books I have had the privilege to review, this very special novel, “Lies the Mushroom Picker Told” by Tom Phelan is a book to be savored by all it’s readers/listeners.
The characters are portrayed with such depth and care, even those who make only momentary appearances at market days, court hearings or in school yard brawls.
Oh how I hate for these great books to end, now to find another to start again!

Snagging a date? Not a problem. But one that meets my special requirements? As the premier best-man-for hire in all of Manhattan, I promise discretion, so when I need a plus one for a couple of I dos, she needs to be A-Plus in reliability. Fortunately, I have a brilliant solution in asking my best friend's sister to go on my arm. Truly is my good friend, too, and I trust her completely.

Wonderful actors, bravo!
Revisado: 12-11-20
Thoroughly enjoyed the performance; however the stories seem to have become formulaic as have the predictable sex scenes. After listening to 3 books I believe it is time to look for another “hot”, “steamy” writer.

Historia
Marvellously atmospheric tale of strangers summoned to a grand but neglected villa on the Italian coast. Each of them has been named in a will, but nobody knows their benefactress.... Four very different people are named in a will. Delia, an opera singer robbed of her voice by illness; George, an idealistic scientist who cannot face what his skills have created; Marjorie, desperately poor and unable to dislodge her writer’s block; and Lucius, ostensibly in control but whose personal life is in chaos.

Become totally immersed in this book!
Revisado: 12-07-20
I leave the summation of the story to Audible, because a novel like this one doesn’t come along often, certainly not often enough. If only there was some place to find gems like Elizabeth Edmondson’s “Villa in Italy” and other such good, good reads!
Years ago there was a much loved catalog of excellant and well curated books called “A Common Reader”. The editor, James Mustich Jr was often fond of noting whenever he was suggesting a book his wife would refer to as a “readers read”. A novel she could lose herself in for days or weeks. I feel certain “Villa in Italy” would have met their highest recommendations. In fact I believe I will put it on my friends Christmas lists this year in hopes they might take the time to listen to this outstanding audio performance by Nicolette McKenzie or lose themselves in a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Each character is richly portrayed, their stories cover a generation and a time in history so troubled, full of pain, resourcefulness, tenderness and enormous talent. These are people I feel like I might have known and will not soon forget.

What a cozy fun listen while isolating mid holidays in our dreary grey north eastern city weather. Chosen based on the strength of the actor who did her usual flawless performance, I am delighted to discover an author new to me and look forward to more adventures in this series.

Her latest endeavor is a tragedy waiting to happen. Desperate Margaretta Seymore is with child - and her husband is receiving poisoned pen letters that imply that her condition is the result of an affair with the notorious actor Fletcher Cavendish.

Oh dear...
Revisado: 11-22-20
“A Purely Private Matter” by Darcie Wilde is so poorly performed by Sarah Nichols that I have to wonder if this is her first audible experience. Initially it seems some of the female characters have deeper voices, a few of the male subjects are spoken in a higher register (except for the one or two who only growl), but then I either adapted to the strange vocals or Ms. Nichols modified her performance.
On reflection, reading this novel would probably have been much more enjoyable.

Oh. My. Gosh.
Revisado: 11-19-20
My heart is still pounding. This Audible Original kept me unwillingly riveted from its curiously innocent yet ominous beginning to its heart stopping ending. I usually avoid anything remotely this unsettling, so I was caught off guard by excellant reviews, the books short length (I mean, how frightening can any novel possibly be that only lasts a couple of hours?!?) and how quickly I got taken in by the relaxing yoga retreat introduction.
Just shows how naive a reader I have been!

Supposedly the narcissist is not capable of emotions or feelings for others, but a novella devoted to following such a character from one heartless encounter to the next left this reader unengaged.

Revisado: 11-14-20
Of course, it must be said kudos go once again to Sherry Thomas for creating this engaging series with characters so colorfully drawn I almost expect to be able to bump into anyone of then the next time I wander London streets.
Kate Reading your talent as you perform audio books has to leave other actors running back to their coaches, hoping one day to be able to move as seamlessly from character to character as you do.

How many names can a character have?!?
Revisado: 11-09-20
Excellant read, «read» being the operative word. I finally borrowed this book from the library to keep track of the various names each character used at different times in the story! That didn’t stop me from selecting the next book in the series, hopefully a little easier to follow in the audible format this time!
