Historia
The Brotherhoods is the chilling chronicle of the shocking crimes of NYPD detectives Stephen Caracappa and Louis Eppolito, notorious rogue cops convicted in April 2006 of the ultimate form of police corruption-shielding their acts behind their badges while they worked for the mob. Their crimes included participation in the murders of at least eight men, kidnapping, torture, and the betrayal of an entire generation of New York City detectives and federal agents

Certain aspects are interesting, but way too much irrelevant and exceedingly dull prose and/or paraphrasing.

Havana Nocturne takes listeners back to Cuba in the years when it was a veritable devil's playground for mob leaders Meyer Lansky and Charles "Lucky" Luciano. Thanks to strong ties with the island's brutal dictator, President Batista, the mob soon owned the biggest luxury hotels and casinos and launched an unprecedented tourist boom. But their dreams collided with those of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and others.

Historia
Versace. The very name conjures up images of outrageous glamour and bold sexuality, opulence and daring. All of course true, but only half the story. Versace is also the legacy of a great creative genius from a poor, backward part of southern Italy who transformed the fashion world through his intuitive understanding of both women and how a changing culture influenced the way they wanted to dress. House of Versace shows how Gianni Versace, with his flamboyant sister Donatella at his side, combined his virtuosic talent and extraordinary ambition to help create celebrity culture.

Quite the epic story
Revisado: 04-16-24
The audio book is excellent for listening while doing mundane work. The fashion world is pretty foreign to me for the most part, but I remember the murder, etc. The bigger story was more interesting than expected.
The narrator mispronounced way more words than one would expect, but hey, even that became entertaining.

From a young age, he found himself influenced by the wrong crowd. Enticed by the wealth, power, and prestige of the mafia, he immersed himself in a world that was foreign to most. But the cold, bitter truth was he was expendable, and his sworn allegiance was rewarded with betrayal.

The Kosher Capones tells the fascinating story of Chicago’s Jewish gangsters from Prohibition into the 1980s. Author Joe Kraus traces these gangsters through the lives, criminal careers, and conflicts of Benjamin “Zukie the Bookie” Zuckerman, last of the independent West Side Jewish bosses, and Lenny Patrick, eventual head of the Syndicate’s “Jewish wing.”

Interesting research done by the author, however;
Revisado: 09-30-23
. . . it doesn't make for a great listen.
I think the author did a great job in researching the many people involved over the years and did a good job of describing the movements of various parts of the Jewish communities over the years. Not being Jewish, but having lived in Chicago for many years, I found the demographic/geographic changes of the Jewish people and their various communities interesting. Some of this I was aware of, but some of the changes were new to me. I also learned some interesting facts about the making of the "Democratic Political Machine" with respect to the election of Mayor Daly etc. I think it will make a good reference book for future students, researchers, and historians; however, this type of work doesn't translate well into audiobook format. Some of the material makes for a good listen, but those parts are interspersed with too many names, many of which don't get enough ink to get a sense of what they did. This is understandable for practical reasons. The book would be 10x longer or need to be multiple volumes.

Historia
Before McDonald's and Holiday Inn, Jack was on the road with his friends, when interstate highways were a novelty and going coast to coast was just for fun. Jack was pre-Vietnam, more 1950s edgy than 1960s politically correct. He loved Keats and Eliot as he sang the praises of the Odes and "The Wasteland", bars and saloons, writers and barkeeps - all about equally, according to the author, who narrates about his short time with Jack on the road.

Some interesting nuggets and some good literary references etc. If you've ever heard Jack speak, ,you know how wonderful his voice is. This author narrator is the opposite. Maybe when the author was 19 (his age at the time of meeting Jack) he was an interesting kid. Now, not so much. I guess I got my $1.95 out of it.

difficult accent to follow.
Revisado: 02-18-18
narrator's voice characterizations are distracting at best and annoying at worst. as with almost all Brits their American accents are awful. very few Brits can pull off No. American accent (Idris Elba is one who can) This narrator can't really pull off region UK accents. Too bad, the material is good. YMMV.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Medium Raw explores those changes, tracking Bourdain's strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood. Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen.
