Historia
Pontzer's groundbreaking studies with hunter-gatherer tribes show how exercise doesn't increase our metabolism. Instead, we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day, no matter our activity level. This was a brilliant evolutionary strategy to survive in times of famine. Now it seems to doom us to obesity. The good news is we can lose weight, but we need to cut calories. Refuting such weight-loss hype as paleo, keto, anti-gluten, anti-grain, and even vegan, Pontzer discusses how all diets succeed or fail: For shedding pounds, a calorie is a calorie.

Very interesting and informative, little guidance
Revisado: 06-05-21
Found this book well written and interesting overall. There is a lot of echoing of information I learned in The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung, which is a little funny given their deviated opinions on certain foods and fasting, but perhaps they have looked at the same studies and arrived at different opinions. Both are valuable. Either way don't get this book thinking it will give you all the answers to your overweight problem but do expect to learn a lot about human physiology and anthropology especially if this is a new realm for you. In a sense it just teaches what many others do, that you have to find a sustainable way of eating and moving to be successful in the long-term...generally without eating processed food but without omitting whole food groups or macronutrients.

Historia
Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing, and he has to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is...elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs.

Enjoyed a lot, in no small part due to the narrator. A very amusing book with heart and humor.

I enjoyed this one even more than the first novel even though I'm not particularly into period novels...it is less about the period and more about the actual story in both. I skipped the second and third novels in this series and it seemed to make no difference and I think those are stories in the same world but about completely different characters.

Historia
Red is a brilliantly told, captivating history of red hair throughout the ages. An audiobook that breaks new ground, dispels myths, and reinforces the special nature of being a redhead, with a look at multiple disciplines, including science, religion, politics, feminism and sexuality, literature, and art. With an obsessive fascination that is as contagious as it is compelling, author Jacky Colliss Harvey (herself a redhead) begins her exploration of red hair in prehistory and traces the redhead gene as it made its way out of Africa with the early human diaspora.

Historia
The publication of Rhett Butler's People marks a major and historic cultural event. Through the storytelling mastery of award-winning writer Donald McCaig, the life and times of the dashing Rhett Butler unfolds. Through Rhett's eyes we meet the people who shaped his larger than life personality as it sprang from Margaret Mitchell: Langston Butler, Rhett's unyielding father; Rosemary his steadfast sister; Tunis Bonneau, Rhett's best friend and a onetime slave; Belle Watling, the woman for whom Rhett cared long before he met Scarlett O'Hara at Twelve Oaks Plantation, on the fateful eve of the Civil War.

Unconvincing
Revisado: 04-10-19
I struggled with this book. Mostly because of the story and partly because of the narration but that might be the writing. I'm just not buying any of it. There are SO MANY inconsistencies with Gone With the Wind and it just doesn't have the same kind of tone. I don't think Mccaig has even read GWTW. It is written with no regard to Scarlett which I see little reason for and I don't understand what is supposed to be canon buy even so there is no excuse for writing it with no regard to the original novel. I don't really believe most of the story, character's actions and dialogue. I don't really care about any character. Belle is dumb rather than just uneducated lower class woman, Archie is a completely different character who apparently knew and adored Rhett prior but didn't play his correct role the night of the Klan incident, Scarlett says Father and no PA in addition to behaving quote differently and Belle and Melanie having an interaction that is specifically contradictory to later events in GWTW. I find all this embarrassing for the author.

Historia
The most popular and beloved American historical novel ever written, Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind is unparalleled in its portrayal of men and women at once larger than life but as real as ourselves. Now best-selling writer Alexandra Ripley brings us back to Tara and reintroduces us to the characters we remember so well: Rhett, Ashley, Mammy, Suellen, Aunt Pittypat, and, of course, Scarlett.

Narrator takes some getting used to.
Revisado: 04-09-19
The story is rich and satisfying and full of interesting turns and similar themes to the original. I do wish they had chosen a narrator with a young voice as all the characters are quite young. The narration is done well but her voice gives a mature quality and my mind's eye pictures Scarlett in her 50s rather than 30s.

Written with input from director Rian Johnson, this official adaptation of Star Wars: The Last Jedi expands on the film to include scenes from alternate versions of the script and other additional content. From the ashes of the Empire has arisen another threat to the galaxy’s freedom: the ruthless First Order. Fortunately, new heroes have emerged to take up arms - and perhaps lay down their lives - for the cause.

fun but not grabbing

I tended to like this first part of this more. This part was a bit all over the place and I wish they had found a better thing for Finn to do...that part could have been deleted altogether. some holes but still fun and better than the movie with some of the additional information you get.

The weak storylines of the force awakens etc movies can generally be ignored since we have this lovely trilogy. Let's just pretend all that other nonsense doesn't happen shall we? This trilogy is great and the narrator is excellent.

At the nursery she runs with her sisters on the New England coast, Sorrel Sparrow has honed her rare gift for nurturing plants and flowers. Now that reputation, and a stroke of good timing, lands Sorrel an unexpected opportunity: reviving a long-dormant Shakespearean garden on an English country estate. Generations have tried - and failed - to bring it back to glory.

The Sparrow Sisters are as tightly woven into the seaside New England town of Granite Point as the wild sweet peas that climb the stone walls along the harbor. Sorrel, Nettie, and Patience are as colorful as the beach plums on the dunes and as mysterious as the fog that rolls into town at dusk.

Really enjoyed.
Revisado: 01-30-18
The story was a bit predictable once it got going but the way it was written was not. I enjoyed the world and felt immersed in the entire plot. I'm hoping there is a follow up with Sorels story. The narrator was good but I disliked the way she did a breathy and floaty voice for the sisters, especially Patience who is so strong willed.
